Physical Profile:

Kaien had a pale complexion and unruly, blonde hair. He would appear to have had heterochromia, a condition that gives the carrier two different coloured eyes. In Kaien's case; his blue eye came from his father while his green eye belonged to his mother.

He was strikingly thin for his age due to malnutrition, and had a number of unsightly scars from battles over the past.

He went through a number of different attires which usually reflect a dramatic change in his lifestyle. The one accessory he retained through all of these costumes was his violet scarf, which had it's share of wear and tear over the years. Upon graduation of the Genin Exams, he bore a grey jacket reminiscant of a lab coat which he usually wore buttoned up, as well as several rather macabre accessories such as a crucifix or skull earrings. After becoming a Jōnin, he changed to a more form-fitting outfit, sporting a mesh-net shirt and a black flak-jacket as opposed to his previous, more conservative attire. Kaien's wardrobe underwent a huge change after he defected to Orochimaru, when he began to wear an off-grey robe fastened by a purple cord belt, reminiscant of those worn by Orochimaru himself. After returning to Konoha, Orochimaru's influence on Kaien's choice of clothing had waned, instead opting for a simple black labcoat with the sleeves rolled up.

Personality:

Kaien was a happy-go-lucky, eccentric young man. He approached everything with insightfulness, optimism and a cheery smile. He would poke fun at his companions with embarassing nicknames in his youth, and though this tendency fell out of habit towards the end of his life, he continued to address them by honorifics. He was cordial and polite, never taking offense or becoming hostile in even the most trying of situations.

Kaien would take nothing in excess, only eating or sleeping when he was at risk of death, just so that he could give his time to others. At first his diligence was exclusive to his mother, who he had hoped to resurrect by improving his healing abilities, but would later extend his efforts to the rest of his family in Konoha. His indiscriminate devotion to the wellbeing of mankind wasn't accepted by everyone, and he frequently found his duty as a shinobi conflicting his duty as a doctor. It was this selfless philanthropy, compassion and charity towards other human beings that eventually lead to Kaien's demise.

Powers and Abilities:

Kaien always had excellent reign over his chakras and could grasp the concept behind most techniques quickly. His proficiency with chakra control made him an ideal medical-nin and he would later hone these talents to become one of the finest in the field. His knowledge of the human anatomy allowed him to swiftly dispatch opponent at the expense of little energy, though he usually refrained from mirthless killing unless left with no other choice. By the end of his life, Kaien could utilise his medical ninjutsu to perform feats such as restoring eyesight, replacing organs and even regrowing limbs.

Lacking the raw strength of Akumu or Tahashi, Kaien preferred a more co-ordinated approach to Taijutsu; seamlessly diminishing his opponent's stamina with weak (but potentially fatal) strikes to their vitals. He would often place himself directly in harm's way to improve his chances of victory, with little or no regard for his own life.

Another substantial advantage for Kaien came from Orochimaru's influence. At an early age he was branded with the Cursed Seal of the Sky, which granted him with a brief surge of strength and speed. The mark eventually developed into it's level two stage, amplifying Kaien's abilities far beyond their boundaries as well as drastically alterring his appearance. His control over the seal was such that he could invoke a partial transformation into levels one or two, and could even manipulate the structure of his body while harnessing its power. During rare periods of intense emotion, Kaien's cursed seal would undergo a third transformation. He became completely bererk while in this state, unable to distinguish friend from foe and destroying anything in his path.

Biography:

Kaien met Masato Tahashi amidst the excitement of the first Genin Exam, and the two became fast friends. He was assigned to Team 3 under Haruno Mamoru alongside Yugiri Akumu and Nara Vacuo, with their bonds and growth form the emotional core of Kaien's world. Their cell was regarded as one of the most efficient in Konoha, able to dispatch a suicide bomber in a matter of seconds. When the time came for the first Chuunin Exams, Kaien was matched up against Tahashi in the preliminary rounds. Though he outmatched his friend after an emotional bout, he forfeited the match to let Tahashi advance to the next round. He was bested by Akumu in the semi-finals of the next Exam, but managed to advance based on his performance.

Kaien's interactions with the people around him began to make him less focused on his true cause, although an encounter with the Zombie Brothers left him beaten both mentally and physically, with a newfound thirst for a man named Orochimaru who supposedly had the power to resurrect the dead. Fixated with this mysterious man, who had not been sighted for years, Kaien became more withdrawn and cold towards his peers. His saving grace came when the Zombie Brothers arranged a meeting between the boy and Orochimaru, who manipulated him into his custody and granted him a Cursed Seal.

Despite his growth as one of Konoha's most capable med-nin and being the first of his age group to attain the rank of Special Jounin, Kaien became more and more unsure of where he was going in life. A mission to investigate a former Akatsuki base suddenly went awry when Zentaru and Amaya appeared and murdered two of his comrades and grievously injured Tahashi. Realising the mirthless fragility of life, the boy's cursed seal unexpectedly activated and using this newfound strength, Kaien savaged Zentaru and killed him. It was after this that he took the leap towards Jounin rank and joined his teacher Mamoru as brothers in arms.

A few years later Orochimaru made a bid for Kaien's soul and hatched a plot to take him into his ranks. He was abducted and a rescue party sent to retrieve him. He was revealed to have finally sold his flesh to the devil and had finally joined Orochimaru. Mamoru, adamant to save his lost student, fought with Kaien in an emotional duel of willpower. Despite using his Cursed Seal which had grown to it's level two form, the battle between student and master came to a close and Kaien was defeated. He told Mamoru that he had been forced against his will to do Orochimaru's bidding because of a device which constantly moniterred his actions that had been placed inside of him. By forcing Mamoru to his limit and causing him to attack him with full force, the device had been destroyed and the duo set out to ambush Orochimaru. Although the criminal escaped the mission had ended successfully, although it was unknown with who Kaien really belonged.

Growing more and more unhinged and dissatisfied with his complacent lifestyle, Kaien made the cold move of completely cutting Tahashi out from his life. He briefly became involved with the ANBU, but left for reasons altogether unclear. He went on to clash with Tahashi again in Aether, however their battle was left unresolved with the timely arrival of Mamoru. The two formed an uneasy alliance in the battles to come and during the destruction of Aether. By the aftermath of the battle, Kaien was determined to rid himself of his former friend forever and set out to murder him. They clashed once again in the Valley of the End with Kaien finally emerging as the victor, but the battle left him more scarred than ever. After the realisation that the bond with Tahashi had pushed him to become an accomplished medical-nin, the two resolved their differences and became friends again.

Kaien took part in the shinobi wars, acting as medical support for various units and taking part in several major battles. As the war drew to a close, the ever present shadow of Orochimaru loomed over Kaien, and he found himself turning his back on his comrades once again with the promise that, should they ever meet again, he wouldn't hesitate to kill them.

For some time after that, Kaien acted as a rudimentary partner to Nojiru and together they secured Uchiha Sasuke's coffin and returned it to Orochimaru for unknown purposes. He would not appear again until much later, returning again to Konoha with the intention of finally exacting his lifetime goal - the revival of Kachisu Okiku. With his mother's corpse he took The Bancho Sarayashiki and left his house to burn. The Konoha forces persued him through the forest in a desperate chase, culminating in a battle at one of Orochimaru's hideouts. Kaien was forced to his limits against the combined might of his former companions and was ultimately defeated. His sanity quickly deteriorating and the base set for destruction, Kaien desperately called out to Orochimaru for aid. The renegade sannin did in fact appear, but with motivations of his own. He released Kaien from his service and struck him down, taking the corpse of Okiku with him. Kaien was finally driven mad by the emotional punishment he had endured and disappeared into the flames, supposedly to his death.

It was later revealed that Kaien did survive the explosion, but with some memories from his previous life erased. He was found and nursed back to health by none other than Daigo, who turned out to be alive and well. The pair later resolved to protect Konoha at all costs, with Kaien adamant to repay his debt to the people who's lives he had torn apart. The duo would next appear amidst a battle with Akatsuki, whom they defeated with relative ease. Daigo and Kaien rejoined with their old comrades, with Kaien's place within the village yet to be decided. After making peace with his mentor and best friend, Kaien had finally come to appreciate the people who had stood at his side throughout his life.

Just as his sensei had before him, the time came for Kaien to pass on his knowledge to the next generation as the squad leader of Team 4. He was recently assigned to assassinate the entire Otogakure council, including the Yokaikage himself. He found himself confronted by conflicting emotions when he confronted an elderly member of the council, Taro. The old man was unwilling to fight and instead offered to read Kaien's future using tarot cards, drawing The Star, The World, The Fool and finally The Snake. Forced to come to recognise the importance of his mission, Kaien slew the man in cold blood. After a series of events during which the remaining three generals met their ends, the group finally found themselves confronted by Reijuu. The shadows of the past proved to have lingered longer than expected with the timely revival of Zentaru, Kakuzu and Thaidesu - all opponents Kaien had killed in the past. The duel of fated raged on with Konoha's forces in an uphill struggle against the seemingly unstoppable Reijuu. The price of victory was a steep one. Kaien's cursed seal was locked away by the Yokaikage, who went on to deal him a mortal wound. He was rejuvinated, however, by Karei's secret tensei jutsu which transferred her life force into Kaien, killing her in the proccess. Though it costed them dearly, Mamoru, Kaien and Tahashi all came out on top and Reijuu was defeated.

Kaien played a major role in the Civil War, where he joined Kazuwa for ambiguous reasons. He later conspired with Mamoru to weed out the rebel forces and eventually drive them out of Konoha. Throughout the war he provided medical support to both sides and eventually succeed in curing a bedridden Naruto along with everyone else. The reappearance of Nero and the end of the war brought about the revalation that the intentions of Kaien and Mamoru were pure, and they had drawn the rebellion out of hiding to ensure their safety while they worked behind the scenes. Although their efforts went to waste, they reconciled with their comrades.

Kaien participated in the Hisoka World Tournament, where the final battle with a deeply disturbed Kenji was decided. When all was said and done, Kaien agreed to operate on Kenji in hopes of returning him to his original body. He was also able to rescue a Akamizu Renza, who had been grievously injured by one of Tahashi's old students. Although he quickly gathered enough tokens to qualify for the next round, Kaien repeatedly found himself shorthanded from offering charity to people without any. Regardless, he managed to make it to the second round, besting Akumu in battle and advancing to the third. He was ultimately disqualified because of a blunder by Tahashi, though he didn't mind too much. Upon their return home, Kaien performed two unsuccessful surgeries on Kenji and Renza, ruining Kenji's chances of returning to the front lines and costing Renza his life. Traumatised by his inability to save them, Kaien sunk into depression.

During a mission to locate Uchiha Itachi in the mountains, The Izo-nin and Kimiko met Zioga, who deeply admired them and followed them around wherever they went. Already dangerously shaken from his previous failures, Kaien went over the edge when Zioga was killed during a skirmish with the Hachibi Jinchuriki - Kaizen. He became unwilling to continue any longer, and, catatonic, was killed by the jinchuriki. A fateful meeting with Reiju within the depths of Hell finally awoke Kaien to the truth and relit his WILL OF FIRE. After completing the mission (with mixed success), Kaien participated in the feud against Akatsuki, losing arm arm to Uzumaki Jiraiya in the proccess. His cursed seal erupted unexpectedly during the battle, endowing him with unbelievable physical strength and fortitude at the expense of his willpower. Under the influence of this new form, Kaien savagely maimed Jiraiya's partner Haji and rampaged until he was pacified by Naruto. Konohagakure suffered a complete defeat at the hands of the Akatsuki, worsened by news of a second Aether being built.

While his comrades were honing their abilities for the upcoming struggle, Kaien embarked on a quest to regenerate his lost arm. He scoured Sunagakure's library for records of an ancient elder named Chiyo, who had supposedly developed a technique which could revive the dead. Although he found the documents he was looking for, celebrations were cut short by the untimely arrival of Kentaru, the child of Zentaru and Amaya. A chase broke out after Kentaru after he stole the book and ran into the desert, apparently trying to avenge his parents. Amaya suddenly revealed herself and beat Kaien to within an inch of his life. He returned home empty-handed, but was convinced by Tahashi to return to the area where they had fought before and reclaim the book. The duo confronted Amaya, but were overwhelmed when Zentaru suddenly reappeared and joined the fight. Things took a turn for the worst; Amaya's rapidly fluctuating powers causing her to go berserk until Kaien and Tahashi dispatched her on Zentaru's request. The old enemies reconciled with them at last after like 8 years, and Kaien was able to regrow his arm in time for Aether II.

The events on the second Aether opened up a wealth of insight into Kaien's heritage when he learned that Soichiro, the man behind the plot to reset the world, was his father. The revelation shocked Kaien to his core and he began to questioning whether his defection from Konoha was a repeat of what his father had done before him. With some reassurance from Daigo, Tahashi and Akumu, he mustered up the courage to fight and defeat Soichiro. His estranged father ended things on peaceful terms with his son, apologising for the hurt he had caused Kachisu Okiku and Kaien before passing away. Kaien would later grow to respect his father for his strong convictions, understanding full well how easilly good intentions can be lead astray.

Following the return from Neo-Aether, Kaien was approached by a fledgeling ninja by the name of Yamanaka Arashi. The young boy showed promise and Kaien chose to take one last student under his tutelage. Their time together was cut short, however, by what would be Kaien's final mission...

After many unforeseen delays the group finally made it to the moon. Alongside Arashi and his sister Akiko, Kaien stayed behind to ward off Kabuto as the others advanced deeper into the cathedral. Kaien struggled to contend with Kabuto's formidable medical techniques, which far exceded his own. The group was finally comprimised as the First Cardinal - Naraku - arrived, swiftly taking care of the others while Kabuto drove his chakra scalpel through Kaien's heart. The trio woke up in a hospital ward some time later, where they were suddenly ambushed shortly after trying to escape. After a brief skirmish the group siezed victory, although Kaien was unable to stop the ringleader of the attack - the Fifth Bishop - from commiting suicide. They were saved a second time during a confrontation with the Second Cardinal Tenbatsu and his Bishop, Menmou, by none other than Kachisu Okiku. At her behest, Kaien readied himself to kill his mother as he had promised, when Orochimaru siezed control of her. He was left with no other option but to engage Okiku in combat, and hurried Arashi/Akiko onwards so that he could undo his mistake alone. Odds of success were soon towering against Kaien, who was challenged to stay alive when pitted against Okiku, her Bancho Sarayashiki summons and his own uncertainty. The bout ended as Kaien rested in his mother's arms, exhausted and drained of his will to oppose for any longer. It was there that Okiku finally silenced her adored son, robbing him of the life she had bequeathed upon him...
The insurmountable grief inflicted by Kaien's death disturbed Orochimaru's control over Okiku, who used her last moments of freedom to resurrect him using her own life as a catalyst. She apologised for all that she had done, expressing her pride for Kaien's growth and wishing him well for the future before passing away, leaving her son behind forever.
Kaien caught up with Arashi and Akiko, who had won against the First Cardinal and were poised to kill him. He left the decision in Arashi's hands, choosing not to act and let the new generation decide for themselves. In the end, Arashi spared the man, but Akiko wasn't so kind and killed him herself. Subsequent to assisting Mamoru inside the Tower of Peace and regroupng with the others, everyone could finally head into battle with Orochimaru. By the time they arrived at Rikudo Sennin's tomb, Orochimaru had already accomplished his goal and taken the sage's body for himself. Kaien assured his comrades that it didn't matter what form their enemy took, they would still try to defeat him no matter what. Orochimaru laid waste to even the best Konoha had to offer, systematically murdering each of them one by one and leaving Kaien marooned on the moon's surface alone. He was finally crushed to death under Shinra Tensei along with a huge fraction of the moon. In the afterlife, he and his friends reunited and met with none other than the Rikudo Sennin, who had achieved god-like status. He explained Orochimaru's goal to them as well as revealing the truth behind the world, but was interupted as the heroes began to disappear from the afterlife. Rikudo Sennin surmised that somebody was reviving them back on the moon, and bid them good luck on their quest to usurp Orochimaru. Kaien strongly objected to Orochimaru's plan to harvest the afterlife's collective consciousness and rule the world using that, but had reservations about Rikudo's plan to destroy the collective consciousness and the Mugenbi with the moon, sacrificing countless lives in the proccess. Both radicals were in direct opposition of Kaien's beliefs, so he decided to put his faith in the strength of mankind and resist Orochimaru. He and the rest of his friends awoke back in their bodies, safe and sound on the moon thanks to Yusuke, who resurrected them using Gedo Rinne Tensei. They finally disembarked from the moon using a makeshift comet created by Yusuke, but Kaien was knocked out trying to save the shuttle from crashing. The others left Kaien behind under Hideo's supervision and rushed to Konoha, which had been ravaged during their absence by Uzumaki Jiraiya.

A gruelling uphill struggle ensued, culminating when Jiraiya crippled both Mamoru and Tahashi. Desperately fatigued and depleted of all of his chakra, Kaien returned to rescue his comrades from the insuperable terror before them. Jiraiya mercilessly brutalised Kaien to within a hair's breadth away from death, erasing most of his tenketsu, paralyzing him, and finally staking him through the heart. Tragically aware of his impending death, Kaien used the final throes of his life to apologise to his beloved family and exchanged one last smile with them.

"I'm sorry, everyone. Looks like this is goodbye."

And with that, Kachisu Kaien, the pale, unassuming doctor who had managed to heal the world, was gone, departing from this world with a smile. His Virtuous Mission was finally complete.

Relationships:

Masato Tahashi:

Kaien and Tahashi's relationship was often likened to that shared between brothers. They became fast friends shortly before the first genin examination, and their bond has endured for years despite their long list of differences. Kaien's innocence and obliviousness to even the simplest of facts complimented Tahashi's impish and reckless personality, and the duo would often get into sticky situations together. As they progressed into adults, their relationship grew with them. A matured Kaien later played the straight man to Tahashi, no now longer a prankster but a hapless rebel. Their relationship was reflected in their fighting styles; Tahashi was straightforward, in-your-face and aggressive whereas Kaien was gentle, subtle and a little cold, making the duo a force to be reckoned with.

The unlikeliest of bonds flourished into a fierce kinship, a beacon for tomorrow's enemies which shone through the world's turmoil and hatred.

"Kaien... Kaien was more than a shinobi to most of us. He was a friend... a brother... even like a son. And even to his death, he had nothing but kindness in his heart, wanting nothing but to see us survive to smile. He inherited more than the Will of Fire; he inherited the hearts of thousands of Shinobi. Rest in peace, brother."

Haruno Mamoru:

After graduating from the Ninja Academy, Kaien was assigned to a three-man cell under Haruno Mamoru. Initially, his master was slightly unnerved by his odd qualities but eventually found a taste for them, and the two got along famously. Kaien looks up to Mamoru as a long-sought-for parental figure and acknowledges that he needs his sensei to pull him out of his desperation, although he would never admit it. Their relationship took a turn for the worst when Kaien defected to Orochimaru, seemingly for good. A broken Mamoru decided that there was no redemption for his fallen student and now regarded him as little more than a crazed criminal. After their emotional struggle at Orochimaru's laboratory Mamoru offered his hand to his prodigé one last time, but yet again was turned down in favour of Orochimaru. Kaien's unexpected return to Konoha stirred unease within Mamoru, who still had doubts about where Kaien's loyalties truly lay. After a nostalgic mission to Takigakure, Kaien finally came to terms with the suffering he had caused and made peace with his old teacher.

The relationship between mentor and student that transcended the boundaries of flesh and blood, evolving into the love between an adoring Father and his faithful son.

"Twelve years ago... I met a young, pale, strange boy. He had interests like no other child his age... but from that day onwards, I could tell he would lead the life of a tragic hero. Kachisu Kaien was more than just a comrade to me... more than a friend. Deep inside... he felt like a son to me. Through thick and thin, he would always come out on top - optimistic, and kind. Kaien... Kachisu Kaien, is not dead. As long as those memories exist deep in my heart...he will exist and be here forever more - as one of the greatest shinobi of Konohagakure, of the world - as one of the greatest human beings ever to walk this earth. Rest in peace, my sweet student."

Yugiri Akumu:

Akumu was part of the squad Kaien was assigned to, with the latter's oddities met with unease and frustration from the former. Akumu would berate Kaien for his playful nickname of "Pikachu-kun", a monicker which has unfortunately found it's way to most of Konoha. Their difference in strength and rank often drove a wedge between them, and the situation was only worsened with Akumu's sudden coma. Although their friendship dwindled along with Akumu's failing health, Kaien still had a place for his friend in his heart.

The union between the mirth of life and the exuberance of lightning, coarsing through the earth like its life blood.

"Kaien believed in many morals during his life. He believed that life needed to be appreciated to the fullest; those who didn't appreciate their lives were scum. He knew that sometimes... the end was justifiable of the means. Those who don't appreciate the life he gave, to so many... they'll be punished."

Senju Daigo:

Daigo and Kaien shared a rather unremarkable relationship up until the point where the latter returned to Orochimaru a second time. Daigo had been cautious of Kaien's exploits with the dark arts from the beginning and was the first to object to the use of his cursed seal. Despite Daigo's pleas to the contrary, Kaien decided against having the curse mark sealed away. They would not meet again until months after the war when Kaien disappeared at Orochimaru's secret laboratory. Daigo found an injured and heavilly distraught Kaien and nursed him back to health. After a month of recuperation, it was Daigo who pulled Kaien out of the darkness and the two made a vow to protect Konoha at all costs.

A pair so diligent in preserving the sanctity of life, that they would lay their lives down to protect mankind's most sacred treasure.

"As a medical shinobi, Kaien knew the value of life. Unfortunately, the only life he didn't seem to value as much, was his own. He was always almost too willing to put himself in danger in the place of others. He had something rare about him, a spirit no one else could compare to. I'll miss you, Kaien."

Hatake Anki:

anki once told kaien to pick up dog shit.

Team 4:

Kaien's relationship with his team was a strained one. He often teased and creeped them out with his eccentricities, sometimes appearing flat out apathetic towards them. He admitted that he was not above using fear to keep his students in line and frequently sent them on impossible and life-threatening tasks.

Mukei Kensei:

Christened "Kaidan-chan" by Kaien, Kensei was the strongest member of his cell. Kaien seemed to punish him a lot more than the others. Truth be told, Kaien always looked out for Kensei the most . Many comparisons can be drawn between Kaien and Kensei, and he frequently struggled to sway his student from the path he had once trod on years before.

The contrast between life and death perpetuated by their smiling faces.

"Kaien-sensei... he was a great teacher, he taught me a lot when I was a chunin. He put me through the most difficult tasks, but also said to me afterwards that he believed in me, and that I would always beat his challenges. Me and Kaien had our differences as I aged. However... I started to understand him and the way he thought, respecting his judgements. He is the one who inspired me to become ANBU, and I owe him for who I am today. Rest in peace."

Kousei Samimaru:

Under the monicker of "Ao-kun" Samimaru is Team 4's fastest developer. Kaien often completely forgot that Samimaru even existed, and frequently searched for a third member to try and fill the gap. Team 4 took a heavy blow when Samimaru's body was not accounted for after the civil war, and Kaien regretably limited the cell to two members as a result.

Kimiko Twilight:

Kaien considered Kimiko the sharpest mind of the trio and nicknamed her "Hakase-chan" for her medical expertise. Surprisingly, there was no friction between Kimiko and her mentor and the two got along well.

Kitamaru Ryuhei:

Often encouraging him and defending him against Tahashi, Kaien acted as a guardian to Ryuhei and tried to push him to the best of his potential throughout his life.

"I looked up to Kaien, not as a superior, but more like an elder brother. He would always be there for us, seeing through that we lived our lives, caring for our needs, making sure we grew up strong - Our guardian. I remember a time when Kaien was taking Tahashi's team, my team, for training instead. He put us through one of the trickiest tasks ever, all to further help us grow stronger, because that's what brothers are for. May your soul rest in peace... Kaien."

Monuku:

While he was initially skeptical of Monuku's religion, their differences soon evolved into the force which brought them together. Monuku would sometimes confer with Kaien when his faith in God dwindled and seek reassurance from him.

"Kaien was an acccepting man. He accepted anyone no matter what they believed... their life long ambitions, their backgrounds... and for that, I will always respect him. Rest in peace, brother."

Yamanaka Arashi:

The third member of Team 4 and the last protegé Kaien would ever teach was Yamanaka Arashi. Arashi admired Kaien for his accomplishments, sentiments which he would humbly brush off. He assumed an almost paternal role to his student until his final days, urging him to harness the best of his ability and support his generation as Kaien had done.

"Kaien-sama... believed in everyone here. Even at the end, he never stopped believing. He... died, giving everyone a better chance. He always taught me that... what happened was in the past, but.... even if it's in the past... it won't be forgotten. Rest in peace, sensei."

Kenji:

Kenji and Kaien had a few fleeting encounters in the past, but their real bond surfaced with the death of Kenji's dear friend Ayeka by Kaien's hand. From that day on, Kenji sought Kaien out for battles on a number of occassions to exact his revenge, attempts that were rarely held in high regard by Kaien. Although he failed to remember his name and readilly berated him for mutilating himself and becoming a monster in his eyes, he acknowledged Kenji's strength. They would later become closer, although Kaien felt tremendous guilt for ruining his old foe's chances of being a shinobi again.
