(scroll down a bit)

I have no idea what most of the things mentioned are so... is it powerful?

MasterofMonster - June 6, 2012 10:40 AM (GMT)
Saw those yesturday, but I guess none can expect me to understand squat here, so...

Pikaby and/or Toadster can probably explain. They usually knows stuff.

pikaby - June 6, 2012 03:12 PM (GMT)
I'm not that great when it comes to interpreting these things...let's see here.

All the specs are the same general features we saw last year! No numbers at all.

Oh. But, then... can you say if it's Good, or Bad? ^^"

Sol Diviner - June 6, 2012 03:20 PM (GMT)
It's obviously better than the Wii, if that's what you're asking. If you're asking if it will be able to compete with the inevitable PS4 and 720, that remains to be seen.

TheFreakyManga - June 6, 2012 03:52 PM (GMT)
Then this htread is useless.

Make it a hype thread. "How good might the Wii U specs be?"

Then, when they inevitably are announced, post them here.

DG - June 6, 2012 04:03 PM (GMT)
I think it was a really good move by Nintendo to heft up the specs. Yes, graphics aren't the most important thing, bla bla bla, but it will be great for them to quit being the odd man out when it comes to ports.

TheFreakyManga - June 6, 2012 07:02 PM (GMT)
I really wish it will stand up to PS4 and the new XBOX.

johnny139 - June 6, 2012 07:06 PM (GMT)
I think Nintendo's in a good spot now... since neither Sony nor Microsoft want to release a new console any time soon. Microsoft is just now coming into bloom with the 360 and Sony has the failing Vita to worry about, along with the PS3 just getting its head about water and the overall state of the company. A failed launch of the PS4 could honestly kill them.

The only problem is there's no reason for casuals to buy a Wii U, since they still have a Wii, and no reason for "core gamers" to make the switch as long as their main hooks are multiplatform games. They need quality exclusives and at this point don't really have any.

Mario the Hedgehog - June 6, 2012 07:23 PM (GMT)
Fortunately, they have at least six months to get some, perhaps a year even. Did they specify a launch window?

The 'Holliday season' was the only thing I heard. So, November? December?

EggBeatr8 - June 6, 2012 10:02 PM (GMT)
I'm not a graphics junkie as you all very well know, but like DG said if the Wii-U can convince more third-parties to make games for it then it's good to go.

Now it just needs to get the gamer's attention. Right now game companies are just making the console seem like a more powerful Wii with a touch screen controller, than an actual new console. While it's very nice to see Mass Effect 3 and all those games we missed on the other systems being announced, we need more exclusives ASAP. If we can get more games like ZOMBIU, then it will get the gaming audience it deserves (I mean exclusives, not all zombie games).

pikaby - June 7, 2012 03:24 PM (GMT)
Nintendo's never going to please the graphics whores. Not with Unreal Engine 4 and Square Enix's Luminous Engine coming and probably won't be supported by Wii U.

If Luminous runs on Wii U though I will jizz my pants, despite me not caring about graphics that much

The problem with this, is that while yes, it's all about the gameplay over the graphics, the lack of graphical power has really hurt the Wii as far as third part support goes.

All the games I own on the Wii are first party with the exception of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (and what a butchered game that was on the Wii). It took me three years to finally realize that I am missing out on so many other games that I want to play, but can't because the Wii's limitations prevents said games from being played on it. Games like Bayonetta, NIER, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout, Borderlands, Resident Evil 5, Mirror's Edge, Dead Island, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and - dare I say - even Duke Nukem Forever. There are so many games I ended up missing out, and the games I listed are not even all the games.

Yes, Nintendo has strong 1st party titles, like Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, the recently released Xenoblade, etc., but they lack the third party titles I listed. The only good third party titles the Wii has that isn't multi-platform is The Last Story, and that's pretty much all that comes to mind. Is there more? Probably one or two I could think of, if I tried, but other than that, I can't think of a damn thing. Also, good first party titles are released for the Wii about 1-3 times a year, while the other consoles are getting great 3rd party games at least once a month.

The only people who are content with owning only a Wii are those few who are satisfied playing only Nintendo and/or casual games. Whereas people like me want to play games in general, and when we have to rely on another console outside of Nintendo where the ratio of games played on other consoles (PS3, in my case) is 15:1, there's a major problem. Again, it's not about the graphics, more than it's about whether or not a Nintendo system can support games that the core gamer demographic wishes to play. Yes, the Wii U is now coming into play, and has announced Darksiders II, Assassins Creed III, Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 (the big shocker to me), etc.. The only problem is that those games are already on the XBOX and PS3, so anyone who aren't Wii-only owners will see no point in shelling out money for a new console to play those games.

Nintendo needs to show that it isn't an obsolete system. They need to show that the Wii U isn't what the Wii should have been, thus being a generation behind yet again. Show me an actual next gen game, whether it uses the Unreal Engine 4, or that new Square-Enix engine, and prove that it can be played on the Wii U. If the Wii U can prove that much, then and only then will all doubts leave my head as to whether or not the Wii U will end up being an obsolete console or not. Nintendo cannot afford to be a step behind again like the Wii was with the 360 and PS3.

TheFreakyManga - June 7, 2012 07:39 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately true. Though you're forgetting some pretty awesome 3rd party Wii games like No More Heroes and Trauma Center.

toadster101 - June 7, 2012 08:57 PM (GMT)
But Nintendo can't show something they don't have. In terms of power, the Wii U WILL be a generation behind once Sony and Microsoft release their new consoles. Nintendo decided to neglect technical specifications once again to focus on gimmicky control schemes that will alienate more developers than they attract. My body isn't ready.

MasterofMonster - June 7, 2012 09:00 PM (GMT)
Microaoft

Also, personally, I don't mind much that the Wii-U graphics aren't as good as the other next gens probably will be. I will most likely buy one of the other anyways, so I get my graphics needs from them.
Plus, Pikmin 3 has graphics that's well enough for me. ^^

You don't matter... to other developers. They always have an excuse to neglect Nintendo consoles.

johnny139 - June 7, 2012 09:26 PM (GMT)
I don't expect Microsoft and Sony's consoles until 2014 if then. They have too much invested in this generation to cut and run as quickly as Nintendo is... they're, in essence, releasing their next gen console years ahead of the competition.

The problem is the install base for those two consoles is just too high among the core. The only way to crack that hold is exclusives and they just don't have enough of them to lure customers away.

EggBeatr8 - June 7, 2012 09:40 PM (GMT)
Nintendo has got at the most 2 good years in the spot light and I think in that time they could definitely impress all core audiences if they tried. I know this year's conference really sucked, but if next year's E3 is amazing then it's good for console gaming as a whole. I mean, look how lost Microsoft and Sony when Nintendo is bad - you can plainly see they borrow ideas from the big N all the time and when there's no inspiration we end up with just the same stuff. If all else fails we still have the 3DS to keep the train going.

Sol Diviner - June 7, 2012 10:31 PM (GMT)
If there's one thing besides innovation that Nintendo has perfected, it's the handhelds. I doubt we'll see anything hold a candle to the likes of the Gameboy, GBA, DS, 3DS, etc. anytime soon or ever.

Mario the Hedgehog - June 8, 2012 02:07 AM (GMT)
How about in six years when the next generation of handhelds is released? :P

pikaby - June 8, 2012 02:37 PM (GMT)
Depends on whether Sony is still going toe-to-toe. I don't see Microsoft making any handheld in ever.

Zekira - June 8, 2012 03:09 PM (GMT)
These specs listed in the site...

...

Are not definitive at all. No actual numbers shown for comparison with the exception of the display capabilities which we already kinda were expecting from the start that Wii U will support full HD derp.

Well very few of the gamer people would bother to actually know the exact numbers of the hardware specs anyway, they're only concern would be whether a specific game from another console could have potential running power on a specific console

pikaby - June 8, 2012 03:16 PM (GMT)
Not to mention old, because those specs are exactly the same as what we got last year from Nintendo. No specifics at all.

By then, Nintendo would have either already released an even better handheld, or whatever new handheld appears as competition for the 3DS will either be too pricey, or lack significant third party support.

- Gameboy vs. Game Gear: Gameboy won
- DS vs. PSP: DS won
- 3DS vs. Vita: 3DS is currently winning

toadfan64 - June 10, 2012 03:03 PM (GMT)
We can't forget the Pro controller for the core games that Nintendo has, sure some 3rd party developers are going to see the tablet and say no, but once they see the Pro controller they shouldn't have any problem with their games on the system, hell since the Wii U will support the Classic Controller Pro they can focus their games around that controller too.

I would imagine that could be dependent on whether or not the game uses the L3 and R3 buttons (clickable joysticks). The Wii U Pad and the Wii U Pro Controller has such buttons, while the Classic Controller Pro lacks them.

Yeah, but I'm sure developers see the CCP and Pro controller and I can see them liking to use the CCP more because of the button layouts.

You know honestly there aren't so many games that do much at all with the clickable joy-sticks tbh.

You'd be surprised with how many third party games use the L3 and R3 buttons. The only games I can see getting away with not using them are RPGs, like Final Fantasy, or Disgaea.

Yeah, I only play a handful of 3rd party games soI guess I wouldn't really know how many, still I personally would love the CCP to have a lot of support (however unlikely that is), because as of right now the Wii U Pro controller just doesn't sit right with me. I need to have it in my hands to play so I can judge it, but it looks awkward to use for some games.

I agree because of the layout of the joysticks. If the right joystick was positioned below the face buttons, no one would have any complaints about it. Of course, all the trolls would then tear it apart with how it's a 360 controller, so no matter what, everyone loses. Still, I'd like to play using the controller and judging it for myself through first-hand experience.
