Remember that girl that everyone once knew, and nobody liked? Yeah, that's a lot of people. But do you remember that girl that everyone knew, and no one liked, so they picked on her to the point where she disappeared? Yeah, that was Ella Riley. Lanky and poorly dressed, shy and timid Ella Riley, who always got good grades, and was nice to everyone, but never got a date to a school dance, never got an invite to a birthday party, never got picked in gym, and her mailbox was empty on Valentines Day. She was no match for the popular girls all throughout Elementary School. That's where Ava Tisdale came in: Beautiful, rich, not so booksmart, but wise in the ways of making someone miserable. Ever since they were little kids, no one is sure what it was, but Ava decided that she was going to make Ella's life a living hell. As if the girl didn't have enough trouble fitting in with her shy demeanor and bookworm tendencies. And, being so smart, Ella had skipped a grade, putting her in a strange age gap.
For whatever reason, her heart or her shoes (Grinch reference, anyone?), Ava continued her reign of terror over Ella's life straight into Jr. High. It was there that Ava and Jason met and started dating. He was the guy all the girls wanted: handsome, muscular, charming. Everyone wanted him, but Ava was the one who hooked him. They seemed like a great couple: it was one of those "You're hot, I'm hot: we should date" things. Ava loved being the center of attention, which meant a need for drama. And she had that with Jason, always stringing him along in some way to make him beg for her back, and she'd create fights for them out of thin air. Jason was sure he was in love with Ava, so he kept on chasing after her, no matter what. Isn't that what Jr. High is all about? Either way, the point is that the two were the couple everyone heard about, everyone knew about. They were the Brad and Angelina of Laurel Canyon's Junior High, only without all the adopted starving children.

One thing no one could explain, however, was what seemed like an interest that Jason had in Ella. It was never classified as romantic. In fact, whenever someone would ask Ava why he would sometimes talk to Ella, she'd respond with him thinking of her like some sort of warped science experiment. When really, no one was sure why he would talk to her sometimes in class, or at least try to. Ella was so damn shy, it was hard to get two words out of her, let alone from the most popular guy in school! It was said that the only incidents that Jason ever started the arguments with Ava on, was when Ava would pick on Ella. He would say she was being cruel and that Ella didn't deserve it, and would ask her why she had to be so mean. Ava was never able to comprehend what he saw in the little nerd, and he wasn't admitting to anything. Still, the fact that Jason was always nice to Ella just made Ava even meaner to the girl, always coming up with new ways to make her life a nightmare.

Set the scene: It's the end of Junior High, their graduation dance. Everyone is excited about starting highschool after the summer break, everyone is nervous. Three hundred Jr. High kids are inside the school's gymnasium, decorated with streamers and special lights and balloons. The end of Junior High, a relief for so many people! Highschool would be a new leaf to turn over! It's like everyone's first prom, and in Laurel Canyon, they do it right. In the middle of it all, Ava has created some argument between her and Jason that she's sure will give people something to talk about over the summer. Jason tries to make things better, but Ava isn't having it. She runs away with four of her best girlfriends and hides in the bathroom with them, sobbing her dramatic tears of sorrow, surely having forgotten what the argument was about by now. But everyone else hasn't. Jason walks back into the gymnasium, everyone too awkward to ask what had happened, and if they did, he isn't sure if he can answer them. He scans the gym, and in the corner, with a book, he sees Ella Riley, reading to herself while all the other kids enjoy their dancing. He didn't even think she'd come, she obviously didn't have a date. Walking over, they talk briefly, and then as a slow song comes on, with everyone watching, he asks her to dance.
Horrified, Ella agrees anyway, sets her book down, and walks out onto the floor with the Jason Conrad. Everyone stares as they dance next to the two of them, or while standing off to the side. And for a moment, everything seems right. This is the kind of thing you want to see happen at a Graduation Dance. Tying up loose ends, starting new beginnings. For Ella, the moment is perfect, and she feels momentarily accepted...And what do you think happens next? You guessed it. Ava walks in. Her tears gone, makeup perfect once again, and with all her BFFs following in tow. And, just like everyone else, her attention is directed to the pair on the dancefloor. Jason and Ella...slow dancing...Her eyes burn electric, her fists clench into balls at her sides, is that smoke coming out of her nostrils? Okay, that's a little extreme but you get it. Her friends are just as shocked as she is. One of them asks what she's going to do...And the group devise a plan.

The song ends, Jason and Ella part, and he thanks her for the dance, before walking out towards the parking lot with some of his friends. Ella can't stop smiling, and she heads over to the food and refreshments table for a drink because her mouth is abnormally dry. Pouring herself a glass of punch, she suddenly gets knocked from behind...The cup slips, the spoon slips, the punch spills...All over her dress. All over her shoes. All over the floor around her. Laughter echoes throughout the gym. Turning, Ella comes face to face with none other than Ava Tisdale, smiling. "Oops, my bad." Ava says. Now, no one's sure why the school thought that Jell-O would be a good treat to serve at Graduation, but that wasn't important now. The fact was that Ava had a bowl of the stuff in her hand, and the next thing Ella knew, so did all of Ava's friends...And they were lifting it with their spoons...And they were throwing it at her. First it was just Ava's friends, and then suddenly, more people thought it would be fun to torment the school's biggest loser. Five, eight, twelve, fifteen people, all throwing Jell-O. Ella's eyes are filling up with tears, and as she turns to run to get away, she slips on the punch on the floor, and falls. This would have been a perfect moment for Carrie powers, but Ella had none. All she could do was slip, and try again and again to stand and run, but not before being pelted with the jiggly Jell-O. Eventually, she did manage to stand, and push were way through the crowd, tears streaming down her face, unable to control her sobbing. The gym is loud with all the laughter, but no one is laughing louder than Ava. Running outside, covered in punch and Jell-O and tears, Ella runs into Jason and his friends. Jason asks what happened, but she can't talk to him, everything was not okay right now. His friends are laughing...maybe he was in on it. She's not sure, she just wants to get away from this school. And she runs. Jason calls after her, but she continues on her way. He never finds out it was all Ava's idea. Ella disappears, and the rest of the town finds out she'd been transferred to private school.

Fast forward: Highschool, junior year. Ava and Jason had been dating for almost four years now, that's a long time for any teenager! But Ava has stuck with her old ways the whole time, and made the relationship full of drama and as tense as could be. Finally, Jason has dumped her. Ava was shocked to find that her tears over this incident were not fake, she was actually rather heartbroken. She and Jason were the most popular kids in school, how could they not be together?! Their relationship wasn't always perfect but it had been steady. Still, Ava has had the summer to recouperate and she returns to school for her senior year to find her popularity still in check, and she believes that she can get Jason back. Who wouldn't want to date her? But with that...comes a new surprise.

Guess who's back? Ella Riley shows up this year, and people are stunned. She grew up, she filled out. No longer lanky, no longer all that timid, no longer plain. She's gorgeous, and fashionable, and nice, and sweet: Four things that Ava has never managed to be all at once. What's more? It appears that Ella has planned on restarting her life in Laurel Canyon, and making things all right for herself, the way she wanted them before but didn't have the confidence to make happen. Ella is seen talking to Jason, and it's rumored that they're dating, or are really good friends by now, but who knows what that means? Will Ella and Jason have a chance at romance? Not if Ava has anything to say about it!!! Her hatred for Ella has only increased, and she is determined to make everyone remember just how much of a loser the girl is, and she's convinced that Jason and her will be together again.
