Title: Exam Results...

CharizardKiller - August 4, 2010 03:44 PM (GMT)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I got good results in all subjects (well... apart from History and technically English)

A in Maths (Really chuffed at that), B in Chemistry and Biology, C in English and D in History. I didn't do as well in English or History as they're mostly essay-based subjects and I'm shit at essays. D is not a passing grade. To be fair I was expecting a D in English as well but did better than I thought!

RocketTK - August 4, 2010 04:12 PM (GMT)
Math takes every opportunity to rub in the fact that everybody but me manages to make As in it I swear.

Practice up on those essay questions though. You're probably only to see more and more of them as time goes on.

CharizardKiller - August 4, 2010 04:21 PM (GMT)
Maybe. Scottish System is quite different to your American one though. Next year I'm taking Advanced Highers (The next step up) in Biology, Chemistry and Maths as well as Higher (The level I just did in my other subjects) Physics.

...Er. No, man. It's cool. We're all lefties here. And by all I mean like half the board. Though statistically it should be only one or two people.

SoaD - August 4, 2010 06:29 PM (GMT)
Why is an essay so difficult? I never had that kind of trouble.

Also you people are ridiculous. How does anyone get a D in anything? Even I got a B in maths and I can't do maths.

Scyther - August 4, 2010 06:34 PM (GMT)
I got a D once for one quarter in 8th grade Honors English.

Aqua - August 4, 2010 06:53 PM (GMT)
Well, SoaD, some people are horrid at essays. Me and CK seem to share that trait. I never got less than a B in anything, but that's an entirely different topic.

I also find it weird that you had to write an essay for History, CK. Standardized tests are easy modo.

CharizardKiller - August 4, 2010 09:07 PM (GMT)
Scottish system really quite different than the one you guys are used to...I think.

RocketTK - August 4, 2010 09:16 PM (GMT)
I just looked it up, It's massively different. D isn't actually a horrible grade over there like it is over here.

It isn't the best but it isn't as bad.

We only have 5 Grades.
A
B
C
D
Fail

Funny thing is one of the guys I know had all five of them this year.
And the grade barriers shift each year depending on what the majority get.
D is still a fail but is easier to appeal. By appeal I mean show that your low grade was actually a fluke or whatever.
Typically the grade barriers are:
A 80%
B 65%
C 50%
D 40%

At least I think those are them but they do change. My main problem with essays for exams is the time limit we get to write them in. That was mostly why I got my D in History I took too long on my first essay and left only 20 minutes for my second essay. We get an hour and a half to write 2 long essays.

Fou - August 5, 2010 04:01 AM (GMT)
I currently don't know what my math grade is, but it's definitely not an A... There's a pretty good chance that I'll end up failing that class. And i'm doing the best job I can. It's not an easy class especially since I'm getting absolutely no help from the professor and the work doesn't match up with the textbook at all. I have a 93% for the homework yet i'm failing all of the exams because there's 20 completely different types of questions per exam so it's hard to keep everything straight.

Aqua - August 5, 2010 05:12 AM (GMT)
Wait 80% and above is an A? You lucky bastard.

The county I was in counted A's from 94-95% and up. Well, in regular school anyway.

^ This.

RocketTK - August 5, 2010 01:23 PM (GMT)
His isn't a constant though. I'd personally rather keep my 94 and up A ratings than have my grading scale change every few years based on how well other students were doing.

Aqua - August 5, 2010 01:29 PM (GMT)
If the line was more blurred, Rocket, I'd cede the point. But that line won't shift by 14% in a single year. And your grades, once recorded as A's, will stay A's. CK, am I wrong here, do you use percentages everywhere and actual marks are just the polish?

Pretty much.

RocketTK - August 5, 2010 08:16 PM (GMT)
I am aware, Aqua.

But I think I'd still rather the higher percent in exchange for perfectly constant. I just work that way I guess.

SoaD - August 6, 2010 05:09 AM (GMT)
I do better with constants because otherwise my academic arrogance goes into overdrive and I do worse than normal. >_>

Granted, the alternative allows for over 100% on tests... ;D

ACADEMIC ARROGANCE YOU SAY?

I envy you, damn it. We've got a friggn' 6-point grading scale over here, and as a result, my grades aren't often as high as they should be.

One of these days, I'm going to vouch for a 10-point grading scale. For god's sake, my school is switching over to block scheduling next year; they shouldn't find the 10-point grading scale that difficult.

passed.

with a d.

what

Fou - August 10, 2010 02:08 AM (GMT)
It wasn't a core class so a D is passing.

RocketTK - August 10, 2010 03:56 AM (GMT)
Hey guys, it's me from about four years in the future.

Just popping in to tell you guys that my college math has been passed with an F

SoaD - August 10, 2010 04:11 AM (GMT)
Shut up, you jerk. You won't fail maths, you're too smart for that. Now stop this negative nancyhood before I close those lips of yours in a highly unexpected fashion.

Aqua - August 10, 2010 08:18 AM (GMT)
...I prefer to think that SoaD meant "with a nailgun." Yes.

Also.
>fou passed trigonometry
>d+
>never got anything less than an a- in any subject of or related to exact science or mathematics
>what the shit is this gently caress
