Title: Hate in the Blogosphere
Description: Where do we draw the line?

Kal - March 27, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
So one of my friends from the Gaming Guardians posts a link to this story from a woman who is (apparently) one of the more respected/educated/well-known bloggers.

Where IS this line between free-but-dumb-violent speech and hate-what-needs-to-have-repercussions? Does there even need to be a line, or do we all (and I don't mean just women) need to develop adamantium skin?

I think we all agree that some of the degrees of this are inevitable, but again, that begs the question of how to quantify threat.

This is one of the most dangerous things you can experiance being popular on the internet.

Some people use the internet to say things the would never mean and or do.
When in some cases people use the internet to find targets for their agression.

Unfortunatly most of the times they say the same things. The woman has every reason to be scared because there is NO garuntee that whoever has been posting isn't a phyco.

What the internet needs is an active present and vissable policing force. A task force that activly monitors and proactivly pursues people who abuse the "freedom of speech" and in no way death threats can be considered "protected speech"

Developing thick skin in this kind of situation is leaving yourself open to the real phycos to hurt you.

The internet tis sick and you can't police it, you could have 1 billion people policing it round the clock and thing would still slip by. Child porn, Necrophilia, snuff films and all sorts of sick shit slip by and as vile and sad as this stuff is you can't stop it, unless you stop the internet all together and if that happened i'd lose some mates and be really pissed.

I feel very sorry for this lady, she's got people posting the SICKEST shit i've seen for a while about her as well as details about her, its not right, its sick and i hope this settles down eventually for her sake.
