In order for Easthampton High students to pass 11th grade American Literature, they must present a term paper no less than 5 pages. Two internet sources may be used for the topic, and however many book sources your little heart desires.
Now that you have the idea of what I need, lets get into detail. My topic is what students think should be read in American Literature. I AM FULLY AWARE ALMOST NO ONE HERE IS IN HIGH SCHOOL ANYMORE. I am simply asking this:
Are there any American books that you think should be taught in an American Literature class that aren't currently and if so why? Also, do you think American poetry should be included in this course, and if so why?
When using book names, please also list the author. Thanks. :]

Hmm, I don't have specific titles off the top of my head, but authors like Ernest Hemingway, Mickey Spillane, Kurt Vonnegut are good choices. A bit harder that the crap they give, but unlike the crap they give, it's not crap. I swear the only good author we had in my American Lit was Poe.

I agree. Except I would have liked to have had the chance to read The Crucible. We also read Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston. I think it was a great book.
Anyway, I'm doing this to write about what students think would be more interesting to read in an American Literature class. I was going to suggest "1984" however, it fiction and I wasn't sure if it would be appropriate. However, I suggested When the Wind Blows by James Paterson....

*edit xP nevermind! it says "not in curriculum!" I'm in high school
mm I'd suggest some Faulkner work. I also would have liked to read more Native American stories o.o the current curriculum seem to have covered a lot already though...

The paper isn't due until the 8th because I have so much to do for it. I'm getting input here...sort of...lol, plus interviewing some English teachers here at school, a few friends from other school around the country, and a couple here in my own school. It's a lot of work to do, plus put in my own 2 cents and quote books.
It's a pain in the ass project, but whatever. :]
Good to know someone's cares to know how it went/will go though. :] I'll keep you updated.

It's due tomorrow, guys. Don't know how long the grading process will take, but as soon as grades come in, I'll let ya know.
As far as the paper itself, I'm half way done and I'll have it finished tonight. If anyone would like to see a copy, let me know and I'll post it here.
