Character Information
Real Name: James Worthington Gordon
Code Name: Jim
Age: 46
Sex: Male
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 185lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown

Distinguishing Features: There is something about Jim Gordon that seems exhausted. Maybe it’s the hound dog look in his eyes, or possibly the way that he seldom smiles. He has the look about him of a man that has seen too much of the sorts of things that break you from the inside out.

At first glance there are a few things that are striking. He wears large framed and thick glasses and his brown hair always seems as if it were dried in front of a large fan. Additionally he sports a thick and impressive mustache on his upper lip, the kind that very few men can wear successfully.

Mostly Jim wears button up shirts, during working hours with a tie as well. Occasionally he can be found wearing the Gotham Police uniform, though more often than not he is dressed in quasi-formal business attire with a long trench style coat over his clothing in the cooler months.

His eyes are the most distinguishing feature of all. As previously mentioned, they are eyes that have seen a lot for such a relatively young age. But somehow, through all of the corruption and pain that Jim has seen there is still a definite glint of compassion left in those eyes.

Equipment: Jim Gordon carries a variety of different things on him just about everywhere he goes. For one thing, he almost will never be found without his Gotham City Police Department identification and badge. Additionally, in a city such as Gotham, he believes it best to keep his standard police issue Glock 19 in his holster. At times he carries this in plain sight, and at times it is concealed inside his jacket.

Other than that, Gordon recently acquired a new vehicle, sensible yet sleek. He now drives a 1999 Toyota Camry, dark blue with tan interior. It provides all the room and power that he needs and isn’t such a burden at the pump.

Skills: Attention to detail. Jim Gordon is both intuitive and highly trained in his ability to get to a crime scene and size it up pretty accurately. He naturally is drawn toward the miniscule and seemingly impertinent details of the crime scene, and his memory for these details is pretty good.

Jim also has pretty good problem solving skills, and like any good cop he can think well on his feet even under pressure. This is partly inherent in him, and partly something that any police officer in Gotham needs to adapt to if they plan on surviving through to their pension. This problem solving skill set includes but is not limited to conflict resolution. He is trained at being able to talk down volatile situations, disarming them with words as his weaponry. He prefers to do this first, but will not hesitate in using force when the situation requires it.

In terms of force, Jim is trained in hand to hand and weaponry as every police officer is. He isn’t the most lethal fighter in Gotham by a long shot, but he is capable of holding his own, and fairly proficient with his firearm. In college he did a little amateur boxing, and is capable of taking as much as he can give.

There is an unbelievable amount of paperwork involved with being a police officer. Because of all of this and because he was a fairly bright and dedicated student in school, Jim has a good grip on English and grammar. This helps him when word economy is important, and overall improves his ability to communicate.

Weaknesses: Primarily the weakness is that Jim is just a man. He’s subject to pain and death, pride and lust and all the other ailments of mankind. Though there is a strong sense of justice that runs through him, he is susceptible to temptation like anyone else.

Like it was stated in the previous section, Jim is a ‘decent’ fighter, but he isn’t a Bruce Lee by any stretch of the imagination. There are many people who are better than him, and since he rarely will fight dirty, it’s pretty easy to catch him with his own rules of conduct.

Additionally, Jim has a weakness in his love. He cares for people, especially his family...and that kind of thing could easily be exploited.

Personality: Noble, courageous, honest and sincere. Men like Jim Gordon don’t really exist in large numbers any longer. Oh, he’s human all right...with moles and everything. But he has good character in spades, and his sincere longing is to do the right thing and protect the innocent.

Jim lives the code of conduct with the police force in every aspect of his life. He deals fairly with people, treats them with respect and honesty, and expects the same in return. Having seen as much as he has over the years hasn’t jaded him or made him hard the way working for the city can tend to do to countless of people. Not that it hasn’t taken a toll on him at all; his eyes have a weary look to them, and his shoulders that were once straight and solid now sag just a little under the weight of life in Gotham.

But beneath it all there is a goodness and love about Jim Gordon that shines through. He is trustworthy and capable of doing the right thing even under the most adverse of situations. Thankfully these character traits have been recognized under the right situations at the right times and Jim has recently been promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant in the GCPD.

In all honesty Jim Gordon likes to play by the rules...all of the rules. In that light he does not approve of vigilantism or any form of taking the law into your own hands. That being said, he recognizes the truth of where Gotham is right now. He’s out there in the grit and the grime every day and he sees the corruption in all its horrible forms that takes place everywhere. He recognizes the fact that the job is so enormous and so out of control that sometimes...maybe you have to bend the rules a little. This comes extremely begrudgingly to him, but he has come to trust Batman. Though he disagrees with some of his tactics, he turns the other way and allows Batman to do his job when the situation requires it.

History: Though he has a set of ingrained and wholesome values, Jim Gordon was actually born very near Chicago, Illinois. He comes from a very close-knit family that looked out for one another and were fairly communicative about doing so.

As he grew up he wasn’t amongst the most popular of the kids in school, but he was fairly well liked. Jim tended to like the athletic sorts of things, particularly track. He dabbled a little in boxing in college, enjoying pitting himself against an opponent and having to think on his feet and use his own power to get out of a situation. While he was fairly adept at both sports, academics and boxing, he was by no means a genius at any of them. In other words, he wasn’t the best, but he wasn’t the worst.

After high school Jim found that he had an overwhelming desire to serve the country. Foregoing his plans to go to college, Jim enlisted in the armed forces and served a full four years faithfully. During this time he learned an even greater degree of discipline and serious mindedness than he had ever known before. Having a bent toward that already, it only seemed to make sense to him.

Upon being released from his service to the United States, Jim moved to Gotham City where he met and married a beautiful young lady named Barbara Kean. The transition into law enforcement was natural and smooth, and soon enough the married couple were making ends meet and Jim was a beat cop. The size and scale of the corruption was jarring to him at first. Since it reached as far as the police force, he had a hard time doing much about it. All he could do in the early years was watch as he sort of worked in what was little more than a mockery of the way things were intended and designed to be. Not knowing how deep the corruption ran, Jim found that his hands were somewhat tied.

At some point in the early years his wife Barbara suffered a miscarriage. Not too long after that his brother had a beautiful baby girl who was not so coincidentally named Barbara. He was happy for his brother, though this definitely was hard to handle since he and his wife were having so much trouble trying to conceive a child of their own.

Life continued to trundle on in this way for many years, Jim and his wife were childless while Barbara grew up under what Jim thought was the loving care of her parents. Roger was his brother after all. It was some time before Jim was able to come face to face with the fact that his own brother might have a drinking problem and might not be taking care of his family in an honorable way.

But Jim had his own triumphs and tribulations. He and his wife finally did have a baby boy, and caring for their son with the danger of his profession, and the meager pay that he received was trial enough.

On the down side there were some Gotham seemed to be at an all time low with the corruption that organized crime brings, and one night while Jim was working late at the office he had a surprise visitor which he later found out called himself 'Batman'.

At first he was suspicious and wary of the whole thing, and was more or less of half a mind to run Batman in on criminal charges. But these were tough times and he needed an ally, no matter how unlikely the arrangement seemed to be. Eventually he came to trust the man behind the mask, though he never has found out his true identity. He came to believe in Batman so thoroughly that when the city was crumbling under Ra’s al Ghoul’s plans, he worked very closely with Batman to stop al Ghoul, even going so far as to pilot the ‘Bat mobile’ in the process of destroying a mechanism that could have destroyed Gotham thoroughly.

Things never had a chance to settle down though, not even after Gotham was saved. News hit Jim pretty hard that an accident had claimed the life of his brother and his sister-in-law. It was a catastrophe that left his niece Barbara Gordon an orphan and Jim did not hesitate to welcome her into his house.

These days Lt. Gordon works very closely with Batman on occasion. He uses his inside information to tip Batman off whenever a new ‘untouchable’ criminal appears on the scene. Take for instance the Riddler, or the Penguin not to mention this Joker menace. He was glad to have the Joker off the streets...though it was only short-lived.

Plot ideas: Jim Gordon is tied in with nearly every character on the board. I believe he is integral and invaluable in this regard. Plotting for him is simple...I’d like to use him as a tie in to bring the various groups of people on the fringes a little closer together.

There seems to be no lack of current plotlines to get involved in with all of the mega villains on board. Honestly I’d rather use him as someone to help other people along with their plotlines and find a way to tie them into the greater scheme than to come up with too many of my own...though I imagine there will be plenty of Gordon drama to get involved with.

Sample Post:

Gordon stood over another crime scene, his thick brows knitted up in concern and sorrow. This girl couldn’t have been more than seventeen old. Her crime? Thinking it was all right to walk her dog at night apparently.

The beat cops scurried around and kept the crowds at bay while the crime scene investigators filed and cataloged and photographed everything in the area. To Gordon it seemed pretty open and close. The knife sticking out of her throat was probably the cause of death. The fact that each of her two miniature poodles had a knife sticking out of their throats told him one thing for certain.

This was the work of the Joker.

The other big clue to that effect was the playing card wedged into her teeth and the way her eyes were painted black and her mouth was bright red and gleaming with makeup. Hell...even the poodles had that damn grin painted on them!

Jim took a sip of his coffee and thought about his life. Chicago had seemed like a tame city sometimes compared to Gotham. Sure they had gangs and crime every which way but loose, but they didn’t have these Jokers or Riddlers. What was it about Gotham that drew these types?

Batman.

He ignored the thought and turned his mind toward Barbara. Was this the kind of environment his brother would have wanted Barbara to grow up in?

“Lieutenant, I think there’s something you need to see,” said the portly officer timidly. He led Jim over to a part of the crime scene that Jim hadn’t viewed yet. There was a high school year book being passed to him by an uncertain looking police officer. Jim slipped on a pair of latex gloves and took the book with one last glance at the officer.

He couldn’t believe what he saw.

From cover to cover with the meticulousness that only insanity can provide, every female in the book was scribbled on. Their eyes were darkened and their lips were painted red. Even Barbara.

He snapped the book shut and quickly got on his phone to call home.

Assuming everything is okay, I wouldn't mind just bringing him back in the way he was...already Commissionered and all.

Yeah, that's fine. I shoulda said before, just tell me which bios (other than Joker, obviously) you want me to move back. I take it you don't want Alfred back just yet? Welcome back :-)

I don't mind playing Alfred. He's a little tough to play with too many different characters without stretching plausibility quite a bit, but I don't mind playing him if he's wanted or needed.

Do you want him on a purely NPC basis then? No reason we can't reserve his NPC-ing to you

That sounds good. Either way. I doubt he's someone that people would be beating down the door to play. smile.gif
