Students can get a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Fisheries at the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Both degrees will prepare a student to work as professionals in fisheries management, research, conservation, education, policy, harvest and marketing organizations.

But which path is right for you?

The major difference between the two degrees is the path to get there. Students will be required to complete the general university requirements for their respective -- either BA or BS -- degrees. Then they must focus on the core requirements.

The core requirements for a BS in Fisheries involve more natural sciences. These includes courses such as Fundamental of Biology I & II and General Chemistry I & II. Read here for more information. On the other hand, core requirements for a BA in Fisheries involve courses such as Accounting Concept and Use I & II. Read here for more specific information. The BA program is actually very new; it was approved by the UA Board of Regents in June 2008.

IMPORTANT
One of the greatest aspects of these degrees is that it is a "Two-Plus-Two Program" -- students can take their first two years of classes at any of the University of Alaska campuses! This flexibility aims to encourage students to take advantage of the diverse opportunities found in Alaska’s coastal and Interior communities. Click here to see the official flyer!

Please post comments and questions about this university (and its programs) in this thread! Also, interested candidates can call (907) 474-7289, the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
