There weren’t a lot of places that he could relax and think clearly, but the subway had always been one of them. It was the motion, he thought. There weren’t a lot of opportunities for someone like him to experience what it was like to be going that fast, considering that he didn’t dare drive with his mental conditions. Not to mention that whenever he went outside he ran the risk of having an episode in a place where he might hurt himself or even, God forbid, someone else.
But he had been cooped up inside his small apartment for nearly three months now… And, despite his shady reasons for going outside, he liked to think that the fresh air was good for him.
The sheet of acid tabs in his jacket? Not so much.
But he had gotten used to taking them, and they at the very least were a psychosis he could remember most of when he came to…
He eyed the people around him, imagining what their lives must be like. He looked at the old man sitting in the seat across from him, his skin wrinkled and his gaze buried in a newspaper. He imagined that the old man sitting across from him was a dentist named Ed Greenback, and he lived in a big two-story house with his two children, Lacy and Thomas. They had blue eyes like him and wide smiles. He used to have a wife, Laura, but she succumbed to cancer four years ago. She left a lot of money behind when she passed, but now those children would never get to have a mother. Lacy was young enough that she might not even remember her as she got older.
Ed Greenback looked up at James, his blue eyes thick with sadness and his wrinkled mouth creased into a wistful smile. “Sad, isn’t it? Children without a mother…” He stood up, his newspaper tossed aside with the headline face up.
It was James. His face. With a headline that said “We’re watching you.”
Ed just smiled at him, even when the subway came to a halt. Even when James stood up quickly and erratically made his way to the door, not taking his eyes off of Ed for even a second. He practically flung himself out the subway door, landing in the soft sand on his hands and knees. He whipped his head around, the subway station nowhere to be found and countless dunes of sand stretching onwards for as far as the eye could see. The sun was large, larger than it could conceivably be without everything on earth being dead. Which had to be it. Everyone was dead…
Everyone but him. The only man left in a dead world covered in sand and ashes, populated by the remains of his fellow humans and the creatures that would hunt him like animal. James wheezed, bile at the back of his throat as he stepped forwards, his feet sinking in the sand and falling through. He felt himself slip through the sand as if it were water, his arms flailing for something to grab onto and his lungs burning like liquid fire as he took in a lungful of sand. He tried to open his eyes and somehow he was able to see, his surroundings clear and vivid. There was something there. Some strange thing, it’s tentacles barbed and sharp, it’s teeth rotten and decayed, it’s bones flexible and oozing some sort of slimy muck that dripped off it in clumps. It roared at him loud enough that he felt his bones bend from the force, his limps snapping like twigs and his body turning to mush.
He screamed for his life, horrible agony surging through his body as he tore grass out of the ground.
Wait, grass?
The pain stopped. The sand was gone. Replaced by a field of grass not too far off of a small path, and a moon overhead that told him that he had definitely lost at least a day to his madness. Maybe more… The last thing he could remember that he could attach reality to was getting on the subway, and the reality of that was questionable at best…
He reached up to his upper lip, feeling dried blood that must have dripped from his nose and what felt like more stubble than he could have gotten from just a day. It had to have been at least five days…
He wiped off the blood, stood up in his now torn and dirtied clothing, and promptly vomited all over a nearby tree.
Where the hell was he?
