Title: 1.3.1 crash - can't play computer room path!
esprit - June 22, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. Upgraded to 1.3.1 and playing through the game on intermediate. After I exit the computer room, the screen wipes blank, turns that darker shade of black as if clock tower is about to load, then just sits there for 5 seconds or so. After that, it crashes and OS X offers up a stack trace.
This appears to be completely repeatable. Even tried a system reboot. Sadly this is one of the few paths I haven't gone down yet, most of what I'm missing from 100% is all behind this room!
Attaching the stack trace.
(Intel OS X 10.5.3 with all updates)

I just tested on my mac, still 10.4.11, and I found no problems in between comp room and clock tower.

I'm on 10.5.3 and also have had no troubles with 1.3.1 going between those two rooms.
Edit for Nich: MacBook Pro, Intel

no problems for me on my macbook 2.4 GHz intel with OS 10.5.3
not sure why you would be having problems with the game. Very odd indeed.

Not sure if this is the right thread. Just started playing over the weekend and ran into a problem that keeps popping up in different rooms. Sent an email to Support but thought I'd try here just in case. I'm on an Intel iMac running 10.4.11 (and honestly don't ask me more or else I'll have to email hubby for help! :) ) The problem usually occurs as I'm changing screens either through a dark entrance or falling down to the dungeon from different rooms. It says
Error: Sound echo delay #1 is out of range (8500 of 8191) InitSoundEchos()
Have no idea what it means. Nor does hubby. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

I know that in certain rooms (such as dungeons) the game will produce a reverb effect (echo effect) on all sounds to make the room sound colder and creepier. I'm guessing the sound engine is having a hard time with reverb effects on your computer.
I don't know if Zack (Return to Dark Castle developer) comes here any more. Hopefully Richard or anyone that still has some contact with Zack gets a chance to pass this bug report to him.
Does this problem occur every time you fall into a dungeon or certain 'dark entrances'? Or does this happen only once in a while?

I've found it guaranteed to happen in the following areas: Witch's Woods (falling to the dungeon), Fireball I (heading to the next screen), Courtyard (into the next screen), and a dark entrance that I can't seem to find again. Other than that, I haven't been good enough, even on Beginner, to advance past the first 2 screens of most of the other rooms. Thought maybe it was a problem with my hardware but maybe not? Thanks again.

Nah...I'm pretty sure your hardware is fine. It's likely to be a software problem. Hopefully Zack will see this and fix it for 1.4.
What version of Return to Dark Castle are you using? The version number should display in the lower right corner at the title screen.

Using 1.3.1, just purchased on Friday. I've found the error a few more times bumping into a wall or down the Dungeon from various rooms so I guess I'll just wait until something comes out and work on my aim, which has gone to pot since 1988.

Original poster here. Happy to say that my issue has managed to resolve itself as mysteriously as it game. After three days of crashing after Computer Room, it now works fine. Which means... yay, 100% on all difficulties.
Thanks to those of you who tested your own systems for this bug. Should I still send my stack trace to the Zacks? It was a major major bug for a while, there!
