Title: I'm stuck @ the Catapult

MuteMutant - April 7, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
I all, I'm glad I've found the DC community!

Here's a n00b question from a n00b player -- well, I haven't played DC since 1994 or something so I consider myself sort of a newbie -- I can't find the way out of the Catapult room.

I kill the mutant, I fly over the river, I kill the guard and now what?!

I'm avoiding spoilers but I've been around this one for too long <_< , so I could use a tip.
Thanks in advance.

You need to wind up the catapult. Low jump through the wheels of the catapult and you can reach the controls to wind it up.

Mike_Evans - April 7, 2008 10:33 PM (GMT)
It will take several tries to get the catapult to send you where you want it to go... Just keep track of how many "clicks" you use so you can do it by trial-and-error.

Sounds fun! Shall try it right away.
Thx

Edit: IT IS FUN! :D

The nearby note hints you on how to bypass the wheel and get to the knob.

I've tried it before, to press the action key near the controls, but I must have been doing something wrong. But I've got it now and it's just wwwooooOOOOOOooaAAAAaah! :D

You were probably standing on top. Same thing happened to me at first. In my opinion Zack should just remove collision with the wheels.

MuteMutant - April 8, 2008 09:56 AM (GMT)
Maybe he put it there as a hint to lead the player to the catapult controls.

If there were no wheels I would have found the controls immediately. <_<

In that case, maybe he found it too easy...

Jon God - April 8, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I think it was so people would find it. I know a lost of people would have without it, but there would be a lot that never thought of it.

MuteMutant - April 9, 2008 12:12 AM (GMT)
I thought of it, just couldn't find the way to operate it.

Jon God - April 10, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
I think the best thing to do has been done in terms of the catapult.

I disagree with this. I think removing the clue and the wheel collision would be much better. The clue breaks suspension of disbelief as it refers to the game mechanic and thus makes no sense story-wise. It is also entirely unnecessary and inelegant. I would like to see it changed in the patch.

I too somewhat agree with this.

My hatred from the wheel mostly stems from the 'inaccurate controls' problem where I'd try to get close enough to the cogwheel to low jump onto the other side...but I'd trip over it. This has happened a number of times because Bryant sometimes takes things too far...I tell him to take a baby step towards the wheel and he takes 2 large steps.

Perhaps cogwheel-jumping (as I call it) will be easier with the more accurate controls in the next patch but it is somewhat silly.

edit: Zack, will we be able to use the catapult in custom levels? :) or was that a hardcoded 'special' object?

Action Jack - April 10, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
The wheels add a sense of challenge to it. If you trip over them, the guard usually gets you before you recover.

I equate it to the spikes in the Casino; just something to throw a little excitement in.

THIS. /\

I really don't think the wheels add any sort of notable challenge. The only time I ever trip over them is if Bryant decides to walk too far (as mentioned by someone else previously), or instead of jumping over the wheel and back down on the other side, he lands above the wheel, and then I run off so he trips and gets dizzy.

Both are control issues, not my fault. Seriously, ditch the wheels.

I just think that without a note, people wouldn't get it, at least some % wouldn't get it.

demonpants - April 11, 2008 06:10 AM (GMT)
I definitely disagree on that. There is a big obvious cogwheel on the thing, the only difficulty is getting to it. If you could walk right up to it like you can with most switches, it's a no brainer. And even if you can't figure it out right away, you'll come back eventually and figure out that something must be done.

I agree entirely. There is a branch of levels which is currently a dead end with no orb or treasure. Obviously there is something to do on the level. Indeed there isn't even a way out of the level! Then there is an enormous catapult. Hmmmm... There are a great many things in the game that are much more subtle than this.

Jon God - April 11, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
Well, I guess it's all opinion for now, I can't really prove it either way.
