Title: mapping the castle
Description: (at least, 77% of it)
gjertsen - March 29, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
So I feel like I've explored this entire castle but evidently I'm still missing a LOT of stuff, based on things I've read in this forum. Plus I'm only at 77%, so I guess there's a good bit to go.
Only trouble is, life has other demands on me besides playing RTDC :o So really my aim is to finish the game, at 100%, at least on Beginner, so I can get onto some other priorities.
So here's the plan. I've created a fairly detailed map of the castle, at least the part I've explored. The intent is to show the rooms, and which ones have treasure and orbs. I would have put the armor pieces in as well, but I forgot where all of it came from. I've not intended the map to reveal every detail, such as the triggers which open up doors, or how to find some special weapons (another reason that's not in there because I haven't found them, yet :P )
Also, I've hidden the rooms that are sort of hidden in separate layers in the PDF, so a new player could easily look at the map and not be bombarded with lots of unwanted spoilers.
I hope this helps some of you out. And whoever knows how to get to some room that's not on the map, kindly post to this topic some sort of hint to point me in the right direction. I'm pretty stumped by Richard's crossbow hint, but I figured I just haven't gotten to the right area of the game, yet. When I get to the new rooms, I'll update the map.

nice - btw, you don't need a key to go from Trouble-3 to Trouble-2, and some of your drop information is missing/incorrect (e.g. RtDC new levels lead to Kitchen, not Trouble-3, and there's no drop info for the classic Shield levels (which apart from S4, all have Trouble-3 drops). Few others missing too in secret rooms.

okay, mostly fixed. In fact you can drop from Shield-4, it just takes a little leap of faith :P
Which drops specifically are incorrect? I just reviewed it, and I think I have all the drops from new levels going to either the Kitchen or the Cave Dungeon, except the new Black Knight levels which drop to Trouble 3.
If you'd prefer not to name secret rooms in public, you can PM me I think with this forum.

Ah; the new BK levels drop to the kitchen, not trouble-3. I'd forgotten you could jump out of shield-4 now - you never could in the classic game :)

that's hilarious... the Black Knight's greeting when I finally get up there I took to be a double entendre and assumed the whole time that I was dropping into Trouble 3.
Map corrected.

*applauds*
You've done an awesome job. Looking at that made me realize all over again just how large this castle is. B)
The content of RtDC is the stuff I imagined as a kid when I first laid hands on DC and didn't even know what it contained yet. My imagination went haywire. :D Then I finally got to play the game, and it was beyond anything I expected. And RtDC was eversomuchmoreso.

gjertsen - March 30, 2008 12:24 PM (GMT)
thanks, all, for the comments about the map. Still hoping someone might notice that not all the rooms are on there, and drop a little reply on here about what hint corresponds with what branch or room of the castle I haven't found, yet.
The only parts of the game I've seen but not yet solved are the Oubliette and the golden apple, but I think I need the same thing to get to both of these treasures.
Edit: just found torture chamber, and added to the map. Pretty sure I need the same prerequisite as I need for the rooms mentioned above. Frustration!
bolldog - March 30, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Below are the hints from the game related to the rooms you do not have. I highlighted the inportnt parts and also included my own hints, and although I didn't directly give anything away if that is more than you wanted then I suppose you should stop reading.
**SPOILERS BELOW**
"They seem to be GUARDING that LARGE BOULDER." In one of the levels off Ante Room II (one with a big rock), there is an obvious secondary exit to the level, you just have to figure out how to get to it.
"FLYING HIGH can grow old. AIM LOW to find gold." Also in a room, indirectly, off Ante Room II. Not sure what to highlight here...it's a level that has to do with flying, and the only one where how you aim affects how you fly.
This one I'm not going to tell you which main room it's off of because that might give it away..."TWO HEADS are better than one." Should be fairly obvious once you think about it.
"Gaming can get you out of TROUBLE." This one is in a room off the Great Hall. If you don't know which one after my hint you should give up. Two secrets in one here.
"The CAVES clearly have a secondary entrance." You found this hint right next to the Witch's Cave. How did you get into the Witch's Cave? This one is in a room off the Great Hall - look for a cave you can enter.
And yes, you will need a certain object for the Torture Chamber and Oubliette, as well as more than one of the above. Think "WILLIAM TELL got it on his first try." Terrible hint, but better than nothing.
That should be most, if not all of what you are missing...I don't have time right now to scrutinize that carefully...
gjertsen - March 30, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
thanks! Exactly the sort of direction I needed!! Map is now updated.
MapI know who William Tell is, and I know what weapon I'm looking for. If you've left a clue as to where to find it, I didn't catch it. I tried about everything I can think to try on the board with the golden apple.
My first thought was I could whack a guard with a shovel, then Q his weapon away from him. But that doesn't work. Does the crossbow come from a guard in some way or am I on the wrong track?

Well, in hindsight, I still think the William Tell clue is more about how to acquire the golden apple than it is about how to acquire the long-sought after weapon that unlocks the last 20% of the game.
I have to tell you all that it was my wife, who has NEVER played this game, who basically looked over my shoulder, analyzed the situation, and said, "why don't you just ..." Darned if she wasn't right. For all those out there still looking for something to hit those targets with, I don't think any hint thus far posted on the spoilers does much help at all. It's hard to provide a hint without taking away something enjoyable to work at to figure out. It is a two-step process. I'll update the map a bit later with all the rooms I just found.

Yeah, for me, that wasn't all that useful of a hint. I guess the BK trains all his employees to hold on tightly to their weapons.
Richard - March 31, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
A bit like the enemies in some of the beat-em-up games. No matter how hard you whack them, that club/sword or whatever is glued on to their fist...
Anyway, re hints; different minds work in different ways.

Absolutely. And I wish my finger dexterity worked in ways I've seen yours do, judging by what I've seen of your demos.
So I'm not sure if this was already answered, but can I get to 100% before facing the Black Knight? Or is defeating him part of getting to 100%?
All that I know I'm missing is a treasure that has to do with a gnome (I don't get it... do I need some kind of prerequisite or trigger or what?) and the sword (maybe I get that if I get all the treasure? if not, another clue?)
jtownsend - March 31, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)
Defeating the Black Knight is worth 10%. You can continue exploring after you do that if you quit and start the game on that difficulty again.
There is a hint in the game about the gnome... go to the library and look through your hints and see if anything jumps out at you.

Yeah, don't worry about the sword, you'll get it soon enough. I personally beat the BK as soon as I could, then I came back and got the rest of the stuff. It's totally doable.
As for the gnome, two things:
1) Think very carefully about every word in the hint's sentence.
2) Remember that treasures can be in any level in the game. Don't get tunnel vision.

I know what level the gnome is on based on other posts in this forum.
I was LUCKY enough....
Luck? I don't get it. Something to do with the casino? I turned my outfit all green to look like a leprechaun, to no avail. I've bombed, upped, downed, shot arrows everywhere in the room and I don't see the treasure. More help def needed.
to have a GNOME living with me...
Gnomes are short? Not sure if this is really part of the clue, or just the fact that the treasure will be in the shape of a gnome if I ever find it.
... for a WHILE
Yeah? Like I've been in this room for a while... waiting for some graveyard-gate like event to happen. Really kind of boring, actually. Somebody please throw me a bone. Or a gnome.
Richard - March 31, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
perhaps the hints are not so perfect for this particular recipient?
The gnome thing has issues, my advice would be to think along the lines of "living with me" -> "living at my house with me".
The worst bit is that if you were impatient to `play' and get started, or not a DC newbie (and haven't played the original demoes) you are unlikely to have even seen the level which this is meant to be hinting at. Hence you would have no hope of getting it; and your best bet would be someone telling you that you needed to go home and think about it. It might be time to re-learn the ropes; `back to basics' as our previous prime minister used to say.

As for breaking down every word in the sentence...
The "living with me" obviously hints on where to go, as you know. So what else sticks out in that sentence? "Gnome?" What do you know about those?

I say they're perfect because they are cryptic but informative. Esp. the "tunnel vision."
Also guys, he's already said he knows WHERE the secret is, just not how to find it, but people keep giving hints about where to go.
Now, some help with finding the durn thing... where do gnomes usually live? In gardens, true, but WHERE in the garden? There's another secret which you probably have found that requires some effort to make an opening. Try playing around with that.
Mike_Evans - March 31, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
BTW, if you're tired of hints, just PM me and I'll tell you the gory details.

They come out after dark, but that has nothing to do with the hint, the gnome is there no matter what time of day you go there.
But there is another part of gnomes that does fit the clue, where do they live when not out at night? I think this is what mike is referring to, although the gnome is not in the garden level:

It still looks not quite right. It says Forest Guard Tower -> North Tower -> South Tower. It should be Forest Guard Tower -> Forest Bridge -> South Tower. As it stands, Forest Bridge isn't mentioned at all on the map. I suppose one of us who has 100% files for Novice through Advanced should go about making a map, but you know...

That and the correct level names. Otherwise the design is excellent, the content is just a bit flaky.

Since this map seems like it will never be updated, I gave it an overhaul in Adobe Illustrator. I added everything: fixed incorrect bits that I could spot, added missing levels, added weapons and notes, edited icons, created icons, etc.
This is, as far as I can tell, 100% complete. Let me know if you spot any errors so I can fix them.

Hey Antiaverage, there is a mistake in your map. You can't return to Castle Grounds from Underground River. You put bi-direccional arrows between those rooms in your map...
