Title: Version 1.2 Bugs
Description: Post 'em here

izdale - March 15, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
I thought we could put lots of bugs in a topic instead on a new topic for each bug.
I found a few last night that I wanted to mention to Zack.

First, in the Potion Factory, I had *finally* gotten to the orb, only to find that one of the barrels had found its way up into the area where the orb is, and it was bouncing back and forth inside of there, so when I went up the ladder, I died. I took a screenshot before going up the ladder, but strangely enough, the screenshot shows the barrel in that same area but on the other side of the wall. But this may not be a bug, just bad luck.

Next, I was in the Stables, on the left side in the middle. I was going to jump onto the rope that goes to the right. I was almost dead, so one shot of anything would have killed me. A boulder was coming at me, so I jumped, hoping to go over it and onto the rope. Well I hit the boulder on the way up, but instead of falling to the ground dead, Bryant hung in the air just below the rope. I was still able to move him left and right, even though he had no health. But he was not grabbing the rope, but was below it doing the same action. Of course, as soon as I let go, he died.

Finally, and I apologize Zack, I ended up playing RTDC all night last night, and I cannot remember how I got this to happen, but I think I was in the middle of a quest for an orb and I was about to enter the last room of the quest. I wasn't in the middle of doing anything besides entering the new room. Here is the error message I received:

Demo recording (or playback)

The film I posted at:

http://z6.invisionfree.com/Dark_Castle_For...p?showtopic=591

can be played back successfully - but most of the time, Bryant ends up dead in the Laboratory2 room, either being eaten by rats, jumping into guards or getting fried.

The manner of death appears to vary depending on the save file that is (or isn't selected) when you click the demo button from the title screen.

Lempa has managed to play it back correctly once - so it is possible - perhaps you might want to use it as a way of trying to debug what is wrong (what state isn't being captured) by the recordings...

Richard - March 16, 2008 04:02 PM (GMT)
additional minor glitch (also shown on above video)

henchmen that are taken down by weapons but whom are also crushable with weights always stand up and get crushed again if you first kill them with a weapon and then drop the weight on them.

Minor, but worth noting... :)

In the Underground River, after the second waterfall+rope, the logs stopped appearing. If I didn't hop on the few that were drifting by, I was in trouble since no more logs continued to appear. It wouldn't make sense for this to be how it is supposed to work.

I asked Zack about this when it happened to me - apparently it is a feature. There aren't infinite logs, so if you wait on one of the islands (like the one with the note on for me) they stop coming after a bit leaving you stranded...

This.

Yeah, you have to keep ontop of things, quite literately.

Ah, oh... just felt so much like a bug, but okay... I guess I can see where you're coming from... It only happened to me the first time I was there and exploring around a bit.

Jon God - March 17, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
Hey Zack, after going to the final room loads of times, I ran into that crashing glitch that everyone else is getting. Retried, and haven't run into it since.

There are some invisible staircases in The Great Tree, unless they're meant to be there.

Haha great screenshot!

Yeah I've seen those too, it's how I got the mushroom.

Nacnud - March 17, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
Yes, I was wondering if they were deliberate for mushroom purposes, but guess not... in which case I don't know how you're 'supposed' to get the mushroom.

Jon God - March 18, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
I can't find them, am I just dense or something?

gruz - March 18, 2008 04:26 AM (GMT)
If you jump onto the whip henchman after he's downed and press Q, Bryant acts like he's falling. This isn't supposed to happen, right?

I guess so - I noticed this one when I was trying to get his whip off him (was still trying to open the fridge with something, and thought you could use it as a rope or... well...)

New bug. I have a demo to demonstrate. When in a shield room, I grab the shield and hold it up. Right as the lighting hits, I pushed the action key again because I thought my shield was about to drop. Pushing the action key while the lightning hits the raised shield made me put the shield back on the post, and I was constantly green after that while I was in that room. It's pretty funny, hopefully the demo works. Someone let me know if it works for you.

<DEMO ONLY WORKS WITH VERSION 1.2>

Also, I am showing off my new colors for the first time in this demo. Everyone's demos have had different colors, making if fun to learn who is who in the demos. I had hoped to be the only demo maker who kept the colors the same as they start and have my demos recognized that way, but apparently *coughRichardcough* others plan to do the same thing, so I finally changed mine up to have my own :)

I found a bug... I was in the forest level and about to battle the henchman. However, he wouldn't get out of his chair! I grabbed his weapon (which he wasn't using because he was sitting in his chair) and then walked in front of him (without dying), but then the game crashed unexpectedly.

Interesting, I'm guessing the henchman was going to get up and fight you when you were on his left but an unexpected problem happened: the henchman had no weapon to pick up. I would have thought that he'd get up and still have his weapon but I guess the game was coded differently (coded in a smarter way...but which leads to this kind of bug).

btw, it's nice to see you erise. I will one day get back to posting on the emuscene, err, macscene forums but right now this game has captivated me.

Thanks! It's good to be recognized! I'm still over at Macscene... not a whole lot going on though. I did make a Return to Dark Castle post on the main page last week.

Oh, how'd that go?

kuon - March 21, 2008 11:22 PM (GMT)
I grabbed a couple of suggestion and bug reports, I did mail zack directly, but I thought I'd share with the forum:

- Fix the game bundle (__MyCompanyName__ as the author is not serious)
- Fix the game icons (the folder are ugly, you did a wonderful job with the game, just do a bit for that)
- Put the saved files in a mac compatible location (Like ~/Library/Application Support) don't write anything where the .app lies
- All keyboard shortcuts should be documented
- Create a demo sharing website
- The music are incredible, make them a bit longer and release and OST
- In the book (When clicking INFO on the main screen), the close button is hard to find, also, we should be able to jump to the hint and grabbed orbs part (at the page which opens when reading the book in the library)
- We should be able to command+tab at any moment, this pausing the game.
- When recording a demo and hitting esc, we should be able to come back to the game, this continuing the demo recording (Maybe with 3 buttons: Cancel (returns to game), Do not save (do what cancel does not), and Save).
- When watching a recorded demo, the hints should not be displayed (or maybe an option when saving the demo).

izdale - March 22, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
I really don't agree with most of those... I think most of the game is just fine and doesn't need to be altered at this point.
The game icons look great.
This forum is a demo sharing website. And there is a site in the works for RTDC that will probably allow for that.
There is a way to pause - Command+P. And if you have the game paused, then you are able to Command+Tab to switch applications.

About demo recording, has anyone else noticed that when watching a demo, for example, when the person in the demo gets the fireball and returns to Ante Room II, the message that pops up about how you have the fireball and what it does, well the message stays there until you click the enter button to close the note! Even though you are watching a demo.

yes, they also pop up whilst you are recording the demo, that is what kuon was referring to in his last point - something which I mentioned to him on IRC.

Actually just fixed this the other day. The help notes will no longer be displayed during replays on the next update. :D

La Porta - March 22, 2008 06:46 PM (GMT)
Zack, didn't know if you saw this one, so I am going to repost it here:

Hey Zack,

Here is a screen shot of what happened. Not sure how, and as you can see they didn't come out at the same time.

I caught the 1st guard the SECOND he came in the door with a well-times fireball....perhaps that did it, but I am not sure.

I kept playing, and I think that one of them is supposed to be in the middle level...because that one never came back.

ZOMG, I have teh uber bug. No screenshot as it would be a spoiler, but if anyone wants a laugh, beat the game on advanced whilst activating mirror mode.

Mm, Bryant keeps running into a wall whil-

Urusai Alastor! Don't give away the ending...

izdale - March 26, 2008 03:05 PM (GMT)
I just found another bug. If you jump onto a grave in the graveyard, and then duck while it sinks, when it sinks all the way down, Bryant is still ducking on the ground and the game freezes.

Action Jack - March 26, 2008 11:22 PM (GMT)
When I beat the Black Knight on Beginner, it looked like a cutscene was starting up, but the gargoyle grabbed me and dropped me in the dungeon two seconds into it.

If you hit any button it will skip it.

Action Jack - March 27, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
No, I didn't want to skip it! I wanted to hear what he was going to say, but I didn't get to because the gargoyle interrupted.

Richard - March 27, 2008 08:22 AM (GMT)
yup, that's sort of a bug. Trick is to deliver the final blow shortly after killing a gargoyle, so you get enough time to read another taunt hurled at you :P

Action Jack - March 27, 2008 11:20 AM (GMT)
Well, I noticed he only says the opening taunt once. Can I hear the closing taunt again, or am I SOL?

no you have to beat him again. I suggest starting a demo recording from the throne room and beating him with that. It should be quite quick...

And to respond to someone else in this post, you can get the mushroom in the Great Tree the "normal" way via two hidden switches.

Found anther fairly massive bug - died in black forest in a lame way - and it brought me back...

wait for it...

in the middle of a tree

So I watched as I re-spawned and died and re-spawned and died and re-spawned and died and...

izdale - March 30, 2008 02:49 AM (GMT)
I have found the COOLEST bug!! If you put a weapon in front of the barrel henchman in the Stables, he picks it up and starts swinging!! But the buggy part of it is that if you put a flail or crossbow in front of him, he picks it up and then the game freezes and crashes. Posted below is a demo of me doing this, and I have made the demo completely spoiler free.

Stables Bug
stables-bug.zip

This also means that you can place a different weapon in front of henchman who normally swing a weapon and they will pick that one up instead. This allows for sword fights in the armory, as you can watch in the demo below. This one DOES contain spoilers of a full inventory.
