Title: Ode to Dark Castle
Description: »Beauty is in the ears that hear«

Helgrim - October 11, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
Some years ago I somehow managed to touch an unknown vein of peotic beauty inside of me and, hastening to pen and paper (in the form of my trusty Performa 5200), I scribbled down the following poem.
Never having had the guts to let the world see what I created that I day I have now finally come forth and hereby present to you my »Ode to Dark Castle«

[clears throat]

With stone in hand and flowing hair,
Prince Duncan climbed the iron stair.
The Knight in Black had drained his mug
and threw it harder than a rock.
It bounced off the wall, the aim was sure,
but Duncans quest was good and pure.
I pressed on 'Q', he raised his shield
and created there a magic field.
The mug through Duncan passed unhurt,
but through the walls a Gargoyle spurt!
My Hero spun to face the foe
but late his rock was raised to throw.
The Beast of Terror grapped his shirt
and dropped my Hero on a pile of dirt.

To Dungeon far away from sun
where slaves were hung and whipped for fun,
Prince Duncan fell with spinning head!
"The Master of Dark Castle had
defeated him", he thought, but nay!
Tomorrow is another day!
Though now it's late, I will return
to steer the Prince past Dragons burn,
through lightning bolt and rats of plague,
for all the terror, he will not crack.
Dark Castle is, to all I said,
The greatest game I ever played!

[bows]

Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks a lot :)

I must admit that I'm a long time reader on these forums but never got around to register an account till now. I'm surprised and pleased to see that our beloved games still can attract so much interest after all these years.
But I guess this only shows that truly great games can stand the Test of Time (to use a common phrase from another epic game series). A feat that many modern game titles would fail in.

With that, I'm glad to finally be on board. I hope we'll all be able to set sail soon enough for the next adventure in our Dark Castle

*claps* *claps* Nicely done.

So you wrote that quite awhile ago then?

The poems text file is dated to April 23. 1998. I can't imagine I have kept it around on my various Macs since then :P
I must have had a fit of nostalgia - probably even played DC and BDC on my good ol' Mac+ (which I still keep around, btw).

I even have the original package and disks for BDC but never for DC, just copies. Does anyone know how the package for the original game looks like?

I have (somewhere) got all the original packaging and disks for DC...

I'd love it if you post pictures! I don't have the packaging anymore, and my disks are buried in my garage.

I think my copy is likewise buried in a garage, or attic. Unfortunately, it is probably at my parents' house. Next time I visit, I will have a look for it.

Thanks.

I've got pics of the back and fronts of both original packages. It's kinda fun to read the original back-of-the-box summaries from Silicon. Maybe I can post 'em sometime.

BTW, awesome poem! And what's with that freaky C64 cover? I don't want to know what that unidentified object that the henchman's holding does.

I don't want to know what that unidentified object that the henchman's holding does.

It looks like a branding iron.

But I won't know why he'd brand prisoners with an "is approximately equal to" sign. Unless he has two others brands, one being an "I," and the other being a butt.

Oh, and nice ode. You may have just inspired me to embarrass myself...

Hahahahahaha Action.

Since this really isn't a review, maybe you could move it to the Creative Minds section instead? :)

Done.

Thanks for being so on top of this gruz. :) Once again, the fastest mod in the west.
