Title: Dark Castle In Your Web Browser.
Description: Check this out!
gruz - June 2, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Okay, first of all I'd like to say this isn't the version we all know and love, it's the Apple IIgs port. Crappy color graphics, dumbed down resolution and many more flaws, but this is the only time I've ever seen a Dark Castle game you can play in your web browser. I know this is a port and not a remake because most of the same glitches still work in this version. (Ducking before you go up shit and so on)
To anyone that can't figure this out:
After it boots double click on the disk DC1 then double click on DC.SYS16 to launch Dark Castle. After you click Play and choose a room, (Note that if you hit 3 you go to the Shield levels and 4 you go to the Black knight levels) you will be prompted to insert disk 2, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Dark Castle (1989)(Three Sixty)(Disk 2 of 2)[No Boot].zip".
http://www.virtualapple.org/darkcastledisk.htmlHit F8 to get rid of the mouse cursor while you're playing, it makes a big difference.
Something I noticed is that occasionally, you do not take damage from any bad guys.
This web emulator probably
DOES NOT work without Windows XP/Vista.
Don't use IE, use Firefox.

that's really cool, and no, it doesn't work on a mac, even with firefox, still, it's really cool to be able to play it through your browser :) Thanks for sharing!

6 days and 1 reply?
Alright everyone, it's time to bust out your Apple tattoos, let's see some pics!

Oh, come on, you can't possibly be surprised. Looking for Windows users in a Dark Castle fan club is like going to an NRA meeting trying to score some pot.

Damn, I re-read what I wrote and it sounded kind of mean, because of the fact that there are very few people that actually post here.
I'm sure there's more DC fans out there with a Mac and/or a PC (or Boot Camp) that in time will check this out, hahah... sorry!
Jon God - June 9, 2007 04:51 AM (GMT)
It's all cool, don't worry, I'm sure we'll get another PCer in here at some point.

:D as much as id like a mac i make due with what i have. i tried the game, after i figured out how to use it and installed some plug ins it was pretty easy.
Jon God - September 12, 2007 08:57 AM (GMT)
How did you find the game? Fun?

Yeah it is neat, kind of buggy but none the less, neat! :)
Jon God - December 11, 2007 12:39 AM (GMT)
I *still* haven't seen it yet.. ^^
gruz - December 11, 2007 02:21 AM (GMT)
You're not missing much, I don't like the IIgs version, it's really lame.
Jon God - December 11, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
Still, dark castle in any form through a web browser is awesome.
gruz - December 11, 2007 12:21 PM (GMT)
What's so impossible about a 68k web browser plugin! I mean with this kind of stuff.
http://myoldmac.net/webse-e-flash.htmI know someone will call me on this but it's just an example.
It wouldn't be impossible to do, at least compared to modern day specs.
Jon God - December 11, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
It would be seriously awesome to have the original Dark Castles ported to flash... in fact,t hat might be a great way of packaging them with DC3, without having to have the emulator bundled.

easier just to run the emulator, I think - it's there, and it works. Why spend ages re-implementing the entire engine in flash and trying to reproduce the physics perfectly?
Still, it would make a cool flash game..

Because, if ported to flash, could ship with the old games, and have people that don't know much about computers not miss out.

Exactly, it's easy for us to play old school DC but that's because we had to take action to play it again. The vast majority of people that loved it probably need that kickstart in their brain to be like, "Dark Castle! That game was rad!"
A flash version would be that much easier for people to just to play the game, everyone can play flash stuff nowadays with the click of a mouse!
It will never happen though... :(

Well, I meant more along the lines of having it packaged with DC3.
gruz - December 12, 2007 11:43 AM (GMT)
Flash plays on PC, Mac, Linux and some phones and PDAs. I would hope if they ever redid it in flash they wouldn't be like, no... And slap some crazy DRM on the files.
Jon God - December 13, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
Well, I dunno, it would still be the easier way to distribute the old games without trying to go through Apple for the ROM file.

I really don't understand why Apple is so up tight about legacy ROM images. What possible relevance is there to a Mac Plus ROM these days? Stupid stupid stupid...

No idea, but it's their property, and as long as that's so they the right to do with it what they want.
Who know is Apple has something planned, or if there's something Apple doesn't want happening.

Oh, I know they are entirely within their rights to withhold them, but it makes no sense. Although, I suppose they're worried that if they become mainstream enough, people will disassemble them and realise they lifted all the code from Xerox Parc or somesuch ;)
Jon God - December 14, 2007 06:50 AM (GMT)
Something like that. Who knows, maybe they just are too busy to deal with the paperwork or something, I dunno.
rolingcoffe - December 14, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
Can anyone point me in the direction of "the best way to play the original DC on a windows XP machine"? I appreciate any help!
Richard - December 14, 2007 08:14 PM (GMT)
Hi and welcome!
Searching on the board is probably your best bet, but
here is a good place to start...
Jon God - December 14, 2007 11:30 PM (GMT)
That should be fine, if you have any problems, just post them.
CuriosTiger - October 5, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
This may be another option.

Boy, what a ride into memory lane... system 7 <3
