| You are surprised to find yourself outside - standing on a plank or maybe what was once a drawbridge of some sort. Lack of any discernible method of raising it is just as well given the huge drop below it (and you) into a ravine. Above you a castle tower rises into the sky - by whose battlements a flock of vultures has gathered in the air. Further off you can see solid land and a set of three parallel ropes hanging from the a suspicious branch jutting out from a cliff-face made of boulders. Two rather improbably flat stone ledges jut out from this cliff-face conveniently close to the ropes; the upper one of which continues into the cliff itself. It is night-time, past midnight. The moon is about half up. Obvious exits are BACK TO [PASSAGEWAY TO] GREAT HALL, DOWN (JUMP) An armoured man or thing is lying unconcious by your feet. A weird creature has appeared on top of that branch. The vulture pecks you, hard! Ouch! [Your endurance just went down.] > |

Above this opening, the wall of boulders continues a long way up. Below you, you can see another similar ledge on which a small bottle lies forgotten in the dirt. The rock continues further into the cliff where it opens into what might be a large cavern. A chilly air current flows from the entrance in stark contrast with the warm night air. Above you a small hole seems to lead to a nest of those blob monsters. A large branch protrude from here on which three parallel ropes are looped round. The ropes dangle down to the ground below out of sight. Across towards the castle, a flock of vultures cicle in the sky. Beyond them are the battlements of a watch tower. Larger towers behind can be seen - one of which defies all logic by having what appears to be its own personal thunder storm. The blob monster slides down the further rope. | X THUNDER STORM. THROW ROCK AT GUARD. ENTER CAVE. Kerbalm! Forks of lightning dance around the tower, and from a distance, you can hear the clouds boom with laughter. You throw a rock at the guard, but miss. [Heading East] You enter the cave. Fireball - 2 You are standing in the entrace of a large subteraneon cavern. The ledge you are standing on gives way to a large drop a few feet from your current vantage point. A chill wind blows from here towards the exit behind you making you wish for the warmth of the day. Stalactites line the ceiling of this cave, which contains a number of rock ledges apparantly floating without any visible means of suspension in the air. The wall closest to you seems to be made of large numbers of boulders and smaller rocks, well weather beaten to a rounded consistency. Someone has scratcted something on the nearest boulder to the edge. It is too dark to see deeper within the cave itself, though a shimmering below you suggests that there may be an underground lake of some sort. Someone has left a cloth bag at the edge of the ledge below the scratchings which appears to be open. Obvious exists are WEST. > |

| >X CLOTH BAG. GET BAG. X WRITING. LISTEN [Moving to the edge of the ledge.] Your footsteps echo slightly in the cave as you approach the edge of the ledge. You note that it is a long way down. You wonder for a moment whether you heard another step just after you stopped. [Fireball - 2 At edge of ledge.] You take a look at the cloth bag. The cloth is an orange-ish colour though it it difficult to tell due to lack of light. The string at the top has come undone and inside rocks can be seen. Someone has stitched some characters around the outside, but they are in Japanese - you might have understood them if you had studied harder in school. They probably say `Handmade by slaves in a sweatshop in China for MegaCorp'. Using the technique Rena taught you, you stash the bag of rocks into hammer-space. The sound of something flapping can be heard. The writing looks more like the tally score for some game. Two names are visible scratched on the rock and to your joy, one of them is `Duncan'. Evidently your uncle has been here! The other is four characters of Japanese - or at least the first two are: a mess of little boxes. The second two are more readable strokes and might just be a messy `LT': `レイ'. After all, scratching onto a boulder is not a highly accurate way of writing. According to the the tally lines, Duncan has 11 points whilst the other has 5. The flapping noise is drawing nearer. [Your endurance is back to normal.] You can hear the sound of flapping coming from further off in the cave above you head. There is the faintest suggestion of a far-away roaring noise. The flapping noise is drawing nearer. You make out the dark shape of a bat flying towards you. One of the stalactites is wobbling. > |
