World Record Set For Single NZ Stamp
8:31 AM, 16 Feb 2006

A new world record price of $NZ185,000 has been set for a rare New Zealand stamp at Sothebys auction in London today.

The 1855 London print one penny full-face Queen sold for $NZ185,000, beating the old record of $NZ125,000 for the 4d ‘invert’, set by Mowbrays in New Zealand in 1999.

The sale of NZ stamps was part of the massive Gawaine Baillie Collection which has been hailed as the most important collection of stamps to be sold for 50 Years.

New Zealand’s leading stamp dealer, John Mowbray, was at the auction today bidding aggressively for the penny stamp but withdrew when the price went through the roof.

``Though we missed out on this single stamp, the auction today was hugely positively news for the market and interest in New Zealand stamps at auction,’’ Mowbray said.

He says this clearly demonstrated the market is extremely strong for quality NZ stamps.

The 1885 penny full-face Queen – NZ’s first stamp – sold for double the estimate. Two other full-face Queens sold for double and triple their estimates.

Mowbray said there was real interest in NZ stamps and the live auction and NZ catalogue prices will have to be rewritten as a result of the landmark Sotheby’s sale.

Some of the items among the 1167 lots of NZ stamps being sold over three days will return to New Zealand.

``I tried to secure these top NZ stamps but the prices went beyond what I had even optimistically expected,’’ Mowbray said.

The late Sir Gawaine competed in numerous motor racing championships, including Le Mans 24 Hours, Goodwood, Aintree, Silverstone and the Tour de France. He won the 1965 Longford event in Tasmania. He never visited NZ.

Sir Gawaine was brought up in his mother’s home of Leeds Castle and had a largely secret interest in stamp collecting.

Yeah it's a shame to waste such a spectucular thread topic on this forum when it's about to close down and all. Leave the quality for Loob.

The question is that, will I be welcomed at the new forum?

Well, it's nice to see that something considers this piece of news worthwhile. Maybe, I'll start a new thread on Loob that shows off my extensive collection.

I'm interested in your stamp Chiang. It may interest you to know that in the 1890s there were raging debates about stamps in New Zealand. There was a major issue with the price of stamps to London, as it was important for colonists to remain in touch with 'home', and for some bizarre reason it cost a lot more to send a letter from New Zealand to London than from London to New Zealand, even though they were sent on the same ships. It was quite a big deal, and involved Agent General William Pember Reeves.

And I keep on getting letters from the U.S., and I wanted to pass the stamps on to you, but they are all ink on envelope stamps, not proper ones.

Fez doesn't like being called an idiot, nor does he like dissenting views.

Most people just get over with it, sticks and stones and all, but mods/admins have a track record of using their 'abilities' instead.

I don't think many people like being called an idiot, yourself included, considering your very precious responses, MrT.

I detect a whiff of whine in your post about you losing your mod abilities.

Well I've talked to Fez about this, he claims it is because mrt is a troll, but we have plenty of trolling on this forum, and I suspect mrt is being singled out because Fez has a grudge against him personally.

I made an effort to play peacemaker between the two of them via PMs, which had until this point worked, but now Fez is bringing out the 'mrt is unwelcome' comments again.

Before anyone calls me anything, I'm just calling it as I see it. Even handed moderation/disapproval against trolls, regardless of who is being trolled and who is doing the trolling (no matter how popular/unpopular those people may be) would prove me wrong.
