Wow. so many people said things while i was writing that. Dang. I feel redundant.

But Sarah, darling, this is the first mention of the lord of Kronus. You'd have to quote me something that shows anything otherwise as I believe the game was the first development of that world.

QUOTE (Durandal @ Oct 16 2009, 10:39 AM)
To clarify some things, there ARE some characters in the game Dawn of War that are original to that game and are not present in Warhammer 40k fluff prior to the game. There are actually several, and as Dawn of War has a continuing plot, many have development and story arc, personality building, etc. Most are human (Imperial, Space Marine, etc) characters. Some are not. Their presence in the game is the first instance of their appearance in 40k canon. These characters would be legal to play here.

Necron lord, however, is a generic unit. HOWEVER there is ONE named Necron Lord in the Dawn of War series, the Necron Lord of Kronus that is in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. He is original to this game. This may be what NecronLord is intending, rather than how it was said. Being specific will always help end confusion...

This character does come with a caveat though: he is completely silent and speaks through others. He does not, through game play, develop personality and any motives are not shown. Though you may play as Necrons, very little is actually given to them by way of characterizations or development. He would be very difficult to play. He is, however, a legal character. This would be a personal choice of taking the challenge or not.

No, you need Advanced to play a character from a property that didn't start out as a videogame.

You can't even play characters original to the videogame spin-offs.

As Ness said. The Character and their world have to been created as part of the development of the video game(s).

The character had to have originated in a legally licensed computer or video game.

From Chapter 01: Character Creation.

If we are limiting it to properties than that needs to be specified in our rules as it is not. That would also be rather troublesome as it would, for example, wipe out the majority of our starting star wars characters.

The staff is arbitrary and unfair. Star Wars characters get a pass because Star Wars is awesome.

You'll notice there are Touhou characters as well, even though that goes against the "commercially produced" rule.

Exactly- but my point being that that would be a retroactive ruling and, in this case, against what is directly stated in our written guidelines. Limiting to original properties has never been written and would constitute a rules revision. If this has become an unstated rule, then its not something we can let be arbitrary. It would either need to be included, or not. As it stands the guidelines are characters original to their games, not characters from properties that are original games. Some one who is original to a game, like Galen Marek/ Starkiller would then become illegal because he is simply a Star Wars character, despite being a wholly original video game character. (Overlooking cool factor here, he's just the example that popped into my head first). How is that appropriate under this ruling?
