1. On Registration 1.1 When you register, register your CHARACTER NAME. Names like oXAlmightyHotOneXo will get you banned. Think. Spaces are allowed so a correct name would look something like this: John Doe.
1.2 You cannot be related to a Canon character. You are not Lupin’s sister. You are not Snape’s cousin. If you pick up a Canon character who is related to another Canon character, WONDERFUL, but it has to be on the Canon List. You cannot make them up. That’s creepy.
1.3 Please make sure you are 17 or above when you register. The board is rated R...it works just like a rated R movie, folks. Oh, and we eat people under the age of seventeen for snacky food, so it’s probably in your best interest anyway.2. On Applications 2.1 Be sure to use the correct application. Adult and Student characters have different forms for a reason. Asking what year you are if you’ve already graduated is just silly. Pay attention.
2.2 For canons, if your application fails, you have 3 days to post a new one. If you are not yet approved by then, your account will be deleted. Easy to understand, right? Okay.
2.3 Keep in mind not to make your character of a certain race or ability until you have applied to do so. Applications can be found here. This means you can’t be some strange amalgamation of various mystical beings just for kicks. It has to have a reason, and it has to make sense… Oh, and we have to approve it. ALSO, if we don’t have it listed in the races section, you can’t claim it in your lineage. The end. For instance, you may not be part Dryad or Satyr.
2.4 If your application has been approved and sorted, the thread would be moved into one of the Ministry Files’ forum. You will not be receiving any PM or any indication that you have been approved. You would have to check if your thread has been moved. Responsibility. You have it. Use it please.
2.5 Changing of houses is NOT allowed. I cannot emphasize this enough. Also read 5.3.
2.6 Those who applied for Prefects may not apply to be in the Quidditch team. You would be WAY too busy to cover both. And let’s face it, this would probably make you grumpy. No one likes a grumpybutt.
2.7 If you want your character to have a pet of magical origin, get it approved by an admin BEFORE you post about it. HP Lexicon has a list of magical beasts, look through it. If the creature in question is not listed as being domesticated, you are not likely to have it. Give us a reason to approve it, or we'll say no. (PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY LOOK AT THE DANGER RATING!) 3. On Profile Customization 3.1 Maximum size for an avatar is 120x120. It’s a square. Made of pixels. You only get a limited number. Use them wisely.
3.2 Signature banner may not exceed 400x300 and cannot be more than one image. There are no exceptions to anyone. If your banner is 402x300, you STILL exceed and it will get deleted. Das. Ende. 3.3 If you can’t think of a PB (played-by), feel free to ask other members in the Graphics Help forum. They’ll be willing to help.
3.4 If you need a signature or avatar, and can’t make them yourself, look in the Graphics Help forum. It’s there for a reason. Post a request, or post in someone’s “shop” thread. Fill out an order form, wait a while. Voila! Sig and avatar set.4. On Advertisement 4.1 If you want to post a link to another board, AWESOME. Put it in the Portkeys section. Guests can post there, so you don’t have to sign up to do it.
4.2 Do not put links to your threads in Portkeys. This is strange, and people will shun you.
4.3 Links in signatures can only be either your character profile, character journal, or a rp thread. No advertising in your signature.
4.4 DO NOT SIGN UP FOR AN ACCOUNT TO ADVERTISE. If you do, and we catch you, you’re done. We’ll delete your ad, we’ll ban the account, and you will not be a happy camper.
4.5 You are not allowed to PM or email anyone to advertise your site. This is weird, and some people consider it rude. It’s like spam. No I don’t want your natural male enhancement, thanks.
4.6 If you want like to affiliate, please PM one of the Admins. We like affiliates. They’re fun.5. On Roleplaying 5.1 If you are new in roleplaying here, please read RP basics.
5.2 You are not required to make long posts of 5, 6 paragraphs when roleplaying. However, please keep your minimum posts to two lines. It’s really not cool to give someone three or four paragraphs and get three sentences in return. It’s like getting socks for Christmas when you wanted a Wii. You cannot play MarioKart with socks.
5.3 STAY IN CHARACTER. This rule is often broken by the originals. The Gryffindors STILL do not mix with Slytherins. Yes, leeway can be given if there are only a selected few but there should not be too many. PROMOTE HOUSE RIVALRY! Gryffindor/ Slytherin Hug tiems = NO.
5.4 Not all students in a particular house behave the same. People in Slytherin may not necessarily be vain, snobbish and gorgeous. Similarly, not every Gryffindor can be pleasant. Hufflepuffs aren’t always dumb. Ravenclaws…well… they’re not ALL nerds…
5.5 Dying of CANONS must be first approved by an admin. Your opinion counts for nothing in this matter. Get over it.
5.6 Keep to In-character rules and be realistic. Students are not allowed to enter the forbidden forest. If you get caught in the Forbidden forest, be ready for some harsh punishment. You are not Harry Potter, unless you want to be a non existent fetus. You are NOT in with the Groundskeeper. You don’t get off lightly. Students have to KEEP to posting in Hogwarts and Hogsmeade if school has started.
5.7 Posts should be kept at a maximum rating of R. Don’t be stupid. If you feel the need to write some literary porn, fine. We really don’t care. Just keep it out of the forum. Do it over PM where no one will be bothered by it (or get in parental/school-related trouble over it). If you think a thread might be headed in that direction, please, hit the fast forward button.
5.8 Godmoding will not be tolerated. Godmoding is also called Powerplaying or Metagaming. If you don’t know what this means, please see RP Basics.6. Miscellaneous 6.1 Don't be an idiot. If you think posting something will piss me off, don't post it.
Things that irritate me:
- Posts that don't have any point (i.e, "lol"). Don't make posts that don't contribute to a conversation or start one. - Sassing the admin. Picking on them a little in the non-rpg forum is fine, but defying them is about the fastest way to get perma-banned. - Punctuation. There's a reason it's on your keyboard. Use it. - Double Posting. Users can edit their own posts. Do it.
6.2 Elitism is NOT acceptable. If you feel another roleplayer is being treated unfairly by an individual or group, contact an admin IMMEDIATELY.7. RP Basics 7.1 In character dialogue will always look like normal text. If you need to talk out of character to explain something in the RP, use double parenthesis or colons. Please crack open an English book and do your best to spell correctly and use correct grammar. Nothing destroys the illusion of a fantasy world like "hay guyz, wutz goin on in this room? r u duing magiks? kewl lol." You will be banned for this.
((This is an out of character post.)) ::So is this.::
"This is an in-character post," Hagrid said.
7.2 Godmoding/Powerplaying/Metagaming.
-Controlling Someone Else’s Character: In a thread, you control YOUR character, and only your character. You cannot control what another character says or does without permission. This includes changing what a character does or says after the fact. Don’t put words into another character’s mouth. -Acting on Another Character: You may control the action, but you cannot control the reaction. If you throw a punch, it doesn’t necessarily hit. -Physics: The laws of physics DO apply to your character. If you jump down the stairs, you will stumble. You don’t float happily to the floor with a flourish and a cloud of pink sparkles and songbirds. Just no. Also, the reverse. If you trip and fall, you can scrape yourself up, but a scrape will not bleed for three days. -Metagaming: Okay. We all know how Peter Pettigrew turns out in the books. However this betrayal has not yet occurred. In fact, it came out of left field for all parties involved. Your character will not instinctively know that Pettigrew is a scumbag, as up to the current point in time he’s been a pretty decent, okay, happy-fun time kind of guy. Just because YOU know something, doesn’t mean your character does. Using your knowledge to influence your character’s actions is Metagaming. If we cite you for Metagaming, we won’t take the time to explain it, so read this and KNOW. If you have questions, ASK THEM before you do something stupid.CONSEQUENCES Strike 1 – You will receive a PM from an admin (Emmi more than likely). It will be polite, nice, and overall pleasant while she explains what we have a problem with. You will be asked to change your behavior. Think of this as a warning. You don’t get any more.
Strike 2 – An admin will contact you again (Again, probably Emmi). She is likely to be a little less patient this time around as this is a second offense situation. Problems will be explained, and you will be expected to comply with any stated actions.
Strike 3 – You are no longer Emmi’s problem. You will get a pm from Rancid, that is not likely to be a happy-fun time pm. It will be blunt, to the point, and probably sarcastic. She doesn’t have a whole lot of patience for retardation, so don’t push it. She’ll point out problems, and is likely to pull up stuff that hasn’t changed. If her message catches you off guard, you weren’t paying enough attention. This is essentially your last chance to before we sick the dogs on you.
Strike 4 – Okay. You’ve managed to irritate Rancid. That was dumb. Really dumb. If you get to this point, you’re pretty much done. We will unleash one of two other punishments on you. The 'Death Thread" or a Ban. In a “Death Thread” your character will (surprise) die. You will receive a pm stating that you have a certain amount of time to write up a post in which your character bites it. It will give you the how and where. It will not be pleasant. If you don’t act in a timely fashion, you lose your right to end with any shred of dignity, and Rancid takes over. Be prepared for humiliation and general embarrassment. This particular punishment does however give you another chance to get back onto the board with another character. However, it will be much more difficult to get in than before. We suggest staying in touch with an admin to get approvals for stuff. The worse of the two punishments is doled out in extreme cases only: The Ban Hammer. If you are banned, you don’t get to come back. Ever. This is not just a one account bannination, this ban affects your IP address. This means you can’t come back with another character. It’s also permanent, unless you get an admin to argue your case. However, if it comes to a ban, we doubt anyone will be willing to stick up for you as we ALL have to agree before we hit someone with one.
To sum it up, don’t be stupid. We want you here. We like roleplaying. Having fun is… well, fun. Don’t screw it up for everyone please, that’s just not cool.
