Oh boy, by the end of that manga, I actually had to walk out of the room (since my parents were there) and cry a little bit. xD Anyway, I'm still reading through Mistborn: The Final Empire. My progress is rather slow, but this is slowly becoming one of my favorite books. Along with that, I'm reading The Wars by Findley, which is honestly one of my favorite pieces of Canadian (I think) literature. We're supposed to read it next term for Modern Literature, but I'm being awesome and reading it over the weekend.

Yay! I'm glad to see that's you're enjoying Mistborn, Chaotic. If you think the first book is great, wait 'til you get to the other books. I don't have much time to go into details so I'll be brief. I finished The Return of the King, and almost finished with The Silmarillion. My brother just sent me a copy of Jaques Vallee's Passport to Magonia so I'll be reading that next.

I'm re-reading The Well of Ascention. I have a lack of other things to read because really, who wants to read Chaucer when I can fangirl over Elend? *ahem* Not that I don't enjoy Chaucer but...it's too much fun to fangirl over Elend~ Umm...yeah, I need more reading material. I'm also reading Kimi wa Pet over at MangaFox, and it's so good! Nice and long, but not TOO long

I finish the Silmarillion some time ago and aside from assigned reading, am now reading Passport to Magonia. I have read Vallee's other books on UFOs, but I had as of now not read his first book. Vallee is an astronomer and UFOlogist who was among the first to notice the similarities between alleged UFO and alien encounters and reports of meeting faries and elves in previous centuries, as well as sighting of ghosts and cryptids.
His main hypothesis is that UFOs are likely not extraterrestrial, but Ultraterrestrial. These are conciousness entities that are from parallely universes, or perhaps exist in our world in a higher dimension. When they are seen by people, the people interpret what they see depending on the culture, time and place. Centuries ago people saw them as faries, elves, angels and demons. These were creatures people believed in. Today, such creature are "out of fashion" so we see them as aliens.
Note that this does not necessarily mean people in the past saw aliens and thought they were faries. In 1887 and during 1896-1897 and 1909-1912, many people sighted what they called "mystery airships." These looked like dirigibles, which had been invented already, but they were faster, larger, or looked more complex. This could be written off as people having seen UFOs but not calling them extraterrestrial craft because such things had become popular at the time, except for some puzzling cases. Some people actually saw the airships land and meet the perfectly humand occupants inside. Often these airship occupants claimed to be from a real-world country like Germany or Italy. That's not to say some "aliens" weren't sighted in relation to airships, but most were normal-looking humans. Since at the time the airship was invented, people saw what they thought would be possible soon, faster, larger airhships. Just as in the past people though they saw what they believed could exist, faries and demons and today people see what they think does exist, extraterrestrials.
I'm not saying I believe in this hypothesis. The vast majority of UFO sighting are misidentifications, delusions, and hoaxes and even the unexplained ones are probably explainable if more data were available. I just find this intersesting and I've always been fascinated by the possibility of parallel world and higher dimensions, even if they do not really exist.
I also read Spiral vol. 8 and The Wallflower vol. 21. Spiral is getting quite intense, including introducing some mysterious, as yet unseen new character. Also I'm starting to get suspicious of Hiyono... As for Wallflower...it makes me want to 1) Bash Sunako and Kyohei's heads together 2) bash Tomoko Hayakawa (the Mangaka)'s head against the wall or 3) bash my head against the wall... It's not that it was a bad volume, but something happened that was very...frustrating. Talk about one step foward and three steps back...

| QUOTE (Strawberry Eggs @ Oct 29 2009, 02:53 PM) | Yeah, most of Laughaholic and Sakura's discussion was on The Hero of Ages. Oi. ^^; |
Oops =___=;; That was a total fail on our part. Sorry Chaotic! I hope you still enjoy the actual reading of it though~
I'm reading The Last Light of the Sun by Guy Gavriel Kay. I almost died of excitement to see that it connects with The Lions of Al-Rassan but having read the first few pages, it seems that connection will be very weak, if not nearly negligible. Still, it made me laugh. Also, it seems it connects to The Sarantine Mosaic series as well, so I suppose I'll have to read that too now. I tried reading it before, but I got bored.
Now that my reading habits have improved though, and my mind matured, I think I might give it another shot. I tend to love Kay's work, so I think I'll love it XD

| QUOTE (Strawberry Eggs @ Nov 1 2009, 01:34 PM) | Yeesh, I almost completely forgot that The Gathering Storm the 12th book in the Wheel of Time series (apparently you can consider it either part 1 of the 12th book or just book 12 with 13 and 14 coming out next year and the year after that). I just found out that the next book will be titled Towers of Midnight and the one after that will have Jordan original title A Memory of Light.
Anyway, I read the Prolugue and the first two chapter already. I will be putting Passport to Magonia on hiatus, but I finished up the chapter I was reading so that I wouldn't be too lost the next time I read it. I want to read at a pace of three chapters a day minimum, reading more if I want to or have the time. Sanderson states in the Foreward that he didn't copy Jordan's style, but rather adapted it to his own. Though I can't put into words how, I can say that it does indeed feel like a mixture of Jordan's writing style and Sanderson, which makes it just as engaging as Jordan's better earlier books. My handheld gaming will likely be reduced drastically, but all the better I say. I have been wating for this book ever since I finished reading Knife of Dreams. |
I wrote the release date for that book on my calendar and I still forgot about it until reading your post ;__;
I can't wait to read it, but I should probably wait to buy it until it's released in paperback since the only harcover I have is A New Spring...then again, maybe I won't.
As soon as tuition is paid, my new goal is to go out and buy it ASAP 8D

Right now I'm reading the Kingdom Hearts manga. It's confusing, because even though you usually associate manga with reading it right to left, this one reads like a normal book. It's confusing! Darn it. I think I made myself look like a fool when I first tried to read it.

Greetings. I am lyudesshadow. I also respond to Shadow, Miss Costa, Caldera, Miss Hikikomori, and 'that crazy chick that screamed in McDonald's that one time'. "Why do my hands smell like bacon?"

I'm reading The Last Concubine by Lesley Downer.
It's pretty good for a romance novel, but it's otherwise pretty much a not-as-good knock-off of Memoirs of a Geisha. I have no trouble sitting down and reading it, but I can't help but feel it's very...unconcerned with historical accuracy and more concerned with the romance.
Not that I mind that. Then again, I could be totally wrong since I'm not exactly an expert in the politics and world of fedual Japan at the end of the 1800's.

I just finished Beyond Good and Evil and Genealogy of Morals by Nietzsche as well as Fear and Trembling by Kierkegaard for my Modern Philosophy essay. According to them, you can do whatever the hell you want as long as you're authentic about it (or God tells you to). Be afraid.
