Medical skills.

In the world of Babbage's Eden the medical profession is only very slowly catching up with the times, as such it is still a very risky business. Many people would prefer to live with their wounds than risk the lances, scalpels and saws of the surgeon.

There are two levels of medical skills Medic, and Surgeon. There are also a number of additional skills and purchases available to people with these skills.

Medic:

Medics are the most basic practitioners of modern medicine. They are the Orderlies and stretcher bearers, able to give basic first aid but not able to do more than help with serious injuries like bullet wounds. The use of Medic is mostly to heal BRUISING damage. If a medic spends 5 minutes treating someone who has lost all of their bruising hits they regain all of them in those 5 minutes.

Appropriate role-play will be required and should involve treating the wounded person with tinctures and so on. This time must not be interrupted; if it is interrupted the medic must start again. A medic is also able to help a surgeon when he performs a medical procedure, making it more likely to succeed.

Medics may also dress wounds; this stops them from being considered useless and allows them to be used although not well.

A Medic may only treat one person at a time.

Surgeon:

Surgeons are the actual Doctors of the new world. It is they who can repair the damage of modern weapons, and save lives. You must first purchase the Medic skill before you can purchase Surgeon. Surgeons can also help with Shock, by reducing the time that the shocked state lasts for. By spending 5 minutes ministering to a person suffering from shock he can half the time the shock will continue for.

Example:

Dr Harold is the Doctor of the Wiltshire 23rdRegiment with both Medic and Surgeon. Private Henry is brought to him in shock from a vicious stabbing he has received from a Xorolunda. Having taken 5 wounds he rightly decided to go into shock and luckily for him the Xorolunda was killed before it could finish him off. They take him immediately to the surgeon and Dr Harold spends 5 minutes ministering to him. Technically Private Henry has 25 minutes of shock left. The Doctor however has halved this to just over 12 minutes.

Surgeons can also return wounds to people who have been wounded although this is a risky process. To perform surgery the Surgeon must work on the patient for at least 5 minutes, performing appropriate RP to do so. They may be aided by a medic while doing so and this gives them a better chance of success. They can also spend more time on a given patient doubling the time taken, and increasing their chances again. There are also some items that can increase the chance of success, or even speed the time somewhat.

Once the selected amount of time has passed the Surgeon can draw a chit from the Surgery bag they were given at the start of the event. If they were aided by a medic or took extra time, they can draw an additional chit and choose the best. The maximum number of chits that can be drawn is 3 however no item or further aid will allow you to pull more than this number of chits.

The chits detail the effect of the surgery.

The potential results are:

Dead. Unfortunately the Surgeons ministrations were not enough to save you or worse they speeded your demise. You are deceased. (5 chits)

Amputation. You have half of your missing wounds returned to you. However if you were wounded in a limb then one of those limbs was removed (the choice is yours). If you were wounded in the head then you can choose to lose an eye instead. The Amputation only effects one location however and it is your choice which of your wounded locations is affected. If all of your wounds were in your body you are very lucky in that amputation has no effect other than to return half of your wounds. This is a lasting effect, however engineering may be able to provide you with Prostheses (such prostheses may also be bought using experience points). (5 chits)

No Effect. The Surgeons ministrations fail to have any effect. (10 chits)

Patch job. The surgeon returns 1 of your wounds but also removes the wounded effect for one location despite the number of wounds you may have taken in that location. For example if you had been wounded in the leg and arm you could choose to have the surgeons effect be to allow you to use your arm, or return the use of your leg! (5 chits)

Exceptional work: The surgeon returns half of your missing wounds and removes all the wounded effects from you. (5 chits)

Amazing work: The Surgeon returns you to full wounds and removes all wounded effects from you. Either he was truly amazing, or you were malingering. (1 chit)


Once you have seen the surgeon you may not see him again until you receive a further wound.

Desperate measures. If you are reduced to 0 wounds you may be saved if a surgeon can get to you in your final wounded period. When they do, they draw a single chit from their surgery bag. However none of the positive results take effect, only the negative effects. If you survive this, you are returned to 1 wound. This does not count as having been seen by the surgeon, so you can still be ministered to!
