Title: Scratch Sprites

espeonbird - April 25, 2011 06:11 PM (GMT)
So latley i've been into scratch spriting. Why? It's fun to colour .3.

I decided to post some here and maybe collect some ideas, i'm running low :c

Here are all the recent ones, roughly in order of when they were started:

This was meant to be related to my self sprite.

This was an outline I made for someone's uber. I wasn't going to do this but you should have seen the uber he made for himself.

This was my first attempt at a werewolf. It was based on a digimon-like thing I made when I was 11.

This is my second attempt at the Werewolf. It is no longer based on the digimon wolf I made and I am pleased with the result.

This was made for Aragornbird's contest on youtube. It isn't fully scratched because I used Samurott and Oshawott's other evo for colours. The category was to re-make Samurott so that it was more like it's pre-evolutions. Honestly, Samurott has horrible colours to work with, making this really difficult. The little HS in the corner stands for HystericalSneasel, my sprite Youtube account, proving it is mine.

What do you think? Do you have any ideas/requests I could do? :D

I'm actually going to give critic, so don't take it too hard but think about what I say :U

First of all, scratch sprites ARE hard to critizise, since there is no list you have to follow.

But mistakes I do spot in some of your sprites are things like the head perspective. In your biggest sprite on the top, you look at the head and don't really know what angle you're looking at it from. Its shading also has minor flaws as far as I can tell.

The second scratch, that uber-thing... It doesn't seem even close to be finished but the legs look messed up and I can't actually make out the head ^^'

With your first attemt on a werewolf, the legs are weird positioned again, the arms seem a little weird because of the really soft shading in usage with that kind of fur, the overall shading is pretty good though.

Your second werewolf.. Overall, it looks really good. But when you go into detail, you see things like the teeth. You can't really make out where the mouth is at all. I mean, you see the teeth, but what you see of it doesn't look like the form a mouth has. And don't wolfes actually have 4 calws? Huh. I do like what you did with the shading for it, you can see it well on one ear, the tail and the streched leg, but you kind forgot setting a position for the light source. It's like it's coming from all angles. ALL OF THEM *cough*

To your latest scratch. To be honest, I do believe it is your worst so far. The body positioning is off. At it self it might work, but not when it carries a giant shell on its back. The head is in profile, which makes it unuseable as a pokemon sprite and a lack of facial expression. What I really do like it what you did to that mass of white fur, or at least your shading for it. Makes it look fluffy. I like fluffy... :3 But you kinda messed that up by not setting a light source again. It seems you spent a liiittle to much time on the fluffy, because the legs and the arms look uncreative and the feet and hands don't even have a real form at all. Sadly, on top of it, the lines on the shell are wobbily and the perspective on the spikes are off.

I know this sounded mean (probably) but I told you what I found, and maybe these things will help you improve.
And please, PLEASE don't bitch about what I said.

Other people I showed this sprite too have been saying that though I don't really know how to fix it. Is it because of the red going over the eye or the head itself? Or both?

Could you tell me where so I can fix it? :3

He only asked for the outline since he wanted to colour it for himself, or did you mean something else?

To be honest I don't fully understand what you mean there. But the guy I made it for wanted to make his own eyes (actually when he did he completely ruined the sprite, which dissapointed me.)

I only really noticed that when I had finished it D: Obvoisly trying to make it look more like fur wasn't a good idea :c

I tried to fix that, I honestly did but me being me managed to make it look worse :( So I tried to go with the fact that his lower jaw had been torn off or something but that wouldn't work since you can see the inside of the lower jaw...Also, i'm so used to drawing cartoon cats with three claws, I never really thought about the actual structure of a wolf D: Thanks for letting me know >.<

Oh lawds. See I don't like to do highlights, so it dosn't get me thinking where the light is actually coming from and I just do shading where it looks like it would be. But I honestly see what you mean (at first i didnt -3-), there's light from the left on the front leg and a line of light on the foot at the back, it kinds looks really stupid now that I think about it XD

Lol... can't belive I did the light thing again XD I think the difficult colours kind of put me off from trying with this sprite, thanks for the advice.

It's honestly not mean at all, I don't get offended by someone who's helping. I really do appreciate what you've said and I won't forget it in futer sprite-making >3< Now to improve my other sprites c:

(You can totally see every difference)

And this is wtfiswrongwiththeleg:

It's the front leg in the backround and the outlines I put there are to represent how it would look with the leg how you preset it which looks... wtfworthy

Thanks Eevee, but I don't really get what you mean in the last image?
