Medi-Cal pays for over 100,000 births by undocumented women
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - More than 100,000 undocumented women each year bear children in California with expenses paid by Medi-Cal, according to state reports.

Such births and related expenses account for more than $400 million of the nearly $1 billion that the program spends annually on health care for illegal immigrants in California, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing state reports.

California long has been one of the more generous states in offering such benefits to illegal immigrants, covering everything from pregnancy tests to postpartum checkups.

Many illegal immigrants who might otherwise shy away from government services view care associated with childbirth as safe to seek.

"I wasn't afraid at all," said Sandra Andrade, an illegal immigrant from Colombia who recently gave birth at a Los Angeles hospital. "I'd always heard that pregnant women are treated well here."

Nationally, a debate is simmering about the costs of providing medical care to illegal immigrants.

In Los Angeles County's public and private hospitals, undocumented women accounted for 41,240 Medi-Cal births in 2004, roughly half the deliveries covered by the public program.

In the four county-run hospitals alone, undocumented women and their newborns will receive more than $20 million in delivery, recovery, nursery and neonatal ICU services this year, according to a county estimate.

These are illegal immigrants using our tax dollars in our hospitals. What do you guys think?

Illegal immigrants have no rights in this country. Thus the name ILLEGAL!

THey are impeding the American labor costs and reaping the luxuries of America without the taxing involved. California politics sicken me.

What gets me is they met this illegal immigrant in the letter, know her name, and she's not deported yet. It's pathetic how we can't even enforce our own immigration laws.

Illegal immigrants actually contribute more to our economy than they cost our economy. The illegal immigrants still have to pay income taxes like legal U.S. citizens.illegal immigrant effects on the economy

That's terrific. That still doesn't explain why they can't come here legally.

Coming to America legally is a long process and the illegal immigrants that come here now need work to help their families know and want to live in a country with better opprotunities than there own now.

Somebody get me a violin. People have come to this country legally for centuries, why should it stop now?

Is fusa tuitim na eirigh - January 11, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
People still come to this country legally and people have always came to this country legally also. Illegal immigrants doesn't just refer to Mexicans

FacistFalangistFool - January 11, 2007 10:38 PM (GMT)
But 99% come through Mexico. And Canadian illegal immigration is nearly dead.

I was just saying that giving them healthcare isn't hurting our economy more than they are helping it.

Very interesting, hmm I believe the whole plan altogether would cause ripples, forget this whole illegal immigrant thing......anyone here think that other states should adopt this plan? What would be the possible effects on our country well other than higher taxes?

Well, I'd assume further increases of Illegal immigrants coming, knowing they can get healtcare. I see your point about the getting money from taxes from them. However, it is quite the same argument as legalizing marijuana. Sure, we'll get the tax benefits. However, it will, in a way, be "accepting" illegal immigrants as ok, much like legalizing marijuana will mean that IT is also "accepted" so to speak. Personally, I don't want that to happen. If they come the US they have to come here the right way.

Patriot76 - January 11, 2007 11:24 PM (GMT)
Illegal immigrants are NOT taxed and that money they don't give to the government are not being recirculated and actually costing Americans more.

And do to the many illegal Mexican immigrants, they have brought over many diseases. Doctors say people will have to get madatory shots for Hep B and other diseases due to the unvaccinated Mexicans.

It may be quicker to come over the border illegally, but it is not safer.

Isa, for you to say you support this country and literally advocate endangering them at the same time is ludacris.

PS- I think I found my new posterboy for liberalsim in my old opponents absence.

ILLEGAL immigration is another one of my peeves (i obviously have a lot of them)
1.)Coming here illegally is slowing down the system for those who want to come here legally.
2.)If you want to be here and expect the same treatment and rights as a citizen, go back to your respective country, apply for citizenship, earn them like everyone else.

If you happen to be an illegal immigrant, dont EVER compare yourself to the european immigrants of the late 1800's and early 1900's, they came here legally. My great grand parents came here legally to flee the failing european economy. If you need to support you family back oin your own country, come here legally to earn money instead of taking jobs (although the ones most americans wouldn't want but still valuable jobs) from legal citizens thus slowing down our economy. If Juan wants to come here and support his family he should come here legally and earn it right.

I know this is an old thread but I figured I would post this here.
I bet you all know about the mass illegal immigration rights rallies now and days. I just saw a special saying they will all carry small white crosses for a mexican who died trying to cross the border. Yeah, I feel so bad because he tried to do something illegal and suffered for it. Maybe if he stood in line like the rest of the immigrants he wouldn't be dead. Why the hell is this still a topic in America today. They are ILLEGAL immigrants, they have no rights, no say, and no place in this country. Correct me if I am wrong.
