Why was the taking of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Phillipines really a violation of fundamental American ideals of self government and democracy?

I need 3 paragraphs for this essay. I have 1 and I need 2 more. Thank You!! :D

Moved to Homework.

Well, looks to me like this question is custom-designed for three paragraphs - one each on Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Just read back through the parts that talk about those annexations, decide whether each one is justified according to "American ideals" of freedom, and write a paragraph about each one. Piece of cake. :)

I believe that it was technically not illegal and constitutional , so you just need to look for more of the moral aspect. How a war to free Cuba and achieve independence resulted in a forced occupation or the Phillipines and an overthrowing of a Queen in Hawaii.

Well, the Hawaiian annexation was sketchy at best, but the Philippines and Puerto Rico were a different animal entirely, seeing as that was spoils from the Spanish-American war. I agree that the situation in the Philippines was perhaps dealt with heavy-handedly, but it really is on a different level than what went on in Hawaii, since at least we had a legitimate pretext for being in the Philippines.
