Yesterday I bought my Fire bellied toad and, within 5 minutes of introduction, it attacked my newt and dragged it underwater! I had to pull the apart but my newt was terrified! It swam all the way into the corner and jammed itself into my coconut husk background. I had pull away some of the husk and then, with the greatest difficulty, pull my newt out. I set up two temporary housing containers and it is now permanently in a 5 gallon tank with sphagnum moss, water, a rock, bunch of gravel and a food dish. It looks nice (even though it took 5 minutes to make, it looks quite nice).

So my point is, even if the taods and newts seem calm, please do no put them together! I was lucky enough to have plenty of supplies at home to whip myself up a nice tank, but you may not be so lucky. Anyways, just telling you about my experience.

And I've seen the opposite. A litle FBN who wouldn't eat except when mouth fed by a fbt! I actually saw it happen. The toad caught a live cricket and offered it to the newt who readily accepted it. They are now inseperable. I guess it all depends on their character and temperament.

Unfortuanately my Fire bellied newt died shortly after. It had caught redleg from the from (or may have already had it) and it died within 2 weeks of the attack.
