Yesterday I brought in some moss from outside. I know it wasn't too smart, but it looks nice, thrives in my vivarium, and I can't buy it. The problem is that there were fly eggs in the moss and now there are 5 or 6 flies in there (with possibly more to come). I don't want to get rid of the flies, but they are kind of annoying.

Is there a way to kill them or should I leave them as food for my venus fly trap and newts? I am considering leaving them there since they are from eggs and can't possibly have any horrible stuff.

Thanks! smile.gif

P.S. I think they are fungus gnats of fruit flies.

I would leave them. Think of them as an added food source.

Yeah, I figured that would be it. They don't seem to be there anymore, but yesterday I saw a little transparent worm in the dirt. I think there are a lot of added food sources there!

My newt is currently in its land phase, so it is a juvenile. Unfortunately I don't know how old it is, so I can't get an estimation for when it will start going in the water (they accept more types of food in the water). I am spraying him gently with water hoping that he will go in the water. Any suggestions on determining the age of the newt (fire bellied) or how to get him to go to the next phase faster?

Some people say to raise the water level until he has no place to be on land. others say theirs have lived on land for years with no ill effects. My fbn lives on land also and eats crickets, mealworms, and once in a while earthworms. He goes in the low section of the water once in a great while but prefers to just wade his legs or on dry land.

Personally, I wouldn't force it. You don't want to cause undo stress.
