Chapter 10
Well, that sure as hell sucked, Alexa thought, storming out of the club. Lucas had tried to flag her down when she’d come back down the stairs but she ignored him. All she wanted to do was get the hell out of there and Lucas was better off not knowing why. When she reached the door, Tommy had his back to the club, blocking it while he tried putting the moves on a girl in line. Alexa knocked him off balance when she pushed her way through. “Hey, what the fuck’s your problem!?” he yelled, grabbing for her arm. She turned to look at him and he promptly let go, apologizing. He hadn’t realized it had been her. Malcolm would have his balls if he found out he’d grabbed her like that. Whether she was his girl or not, Malcolm still had a thing for her and woe to anyone who stepped out of line. If she was upset earlier, it was nothing compared to how terrible she felt now. She started walking as everything started crashing in on her. Aidan was the first problem. She was no longer mad at him for the remark he’d made. She knew she’d overreacted, but at the time, it had hurt. She remembered his kiss, his touch, and shuddered. She hadn’t had a memorable lover in so long and just that little bit of foreplay they’d shared had been incredible. She found herself wondering what kind of lover he could be if given a chance. She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. No, Lex, it will just add to your problems. Next on her list was her run in with Malcolm. Now that Malcolm knew she and Lucas were friends, he might try to use that friendship to his advantage. Damn you, Malcolm, she thought, it always comes back to you. She was tired of running. She wanted somewhere to call home, and her hometown was exactly where she wanted to be. Couldn’t he just leave her alone? What more could he possibly want from her? Respect. Ha! What a laugh! If he wanted respect he should have gone about things a different way. Maybe then, they’d still be together. That really wasn’t something she wanted to think about. She didn’t want to think about anything right now. She just wanted to be left alone. The crowds were starting to thin. The bars and clubs would all be closing soon. She had nowhere else to go except back to the warehouse, which meant facing Aidan. Then again, why did she have to go back there at all? She was only there to help him. He obviously wouldn’t care if she came back. He might be on his way to the airport for all she knew. Good. Then she wouldn’t have to think about him either. She didn’t mean that, but it would be easier if things just ended where they were. But as much as she tried to deny it, she had felt something between them. And it scared her. The last relationship she’d been in had failed miserably. Did she really want to go through that again? Sure, it felt good; it felt right. That’s what she’d thought the last time. Aidan was a different person, though. But he was still mortal. Still different. So different. During that time, Aidan was pacing across the entire length of the building, wondering what to do. He wanted to look for her. He tried to recall the names of various places in the city she’d mentioned, but nothing came to mind other than Eternities, the place her ex owned. He remembered she mentioned her friend worked there. Maybe she went to see him? Surely in a busy club no one would pay him any mind? Besides, nightclubs were dark anyway. It was as good a place as any to start. He couldn’t stand this waiting around to see whether or not she’d come back, and the later it got, the more he wondered if that was what she had in mind all along. He climbed back down the stairs and tried to retrace the steps they’d taken earlier. It was quite by accident that he’d found South Street. He looked up and noted the intersection and scanned the block. There were nightclubs and bars galore. If this guy were as business savvy as Alexa had led him to believe, this would be the place to put a nightclub. But which way should he go? He turned right and started looking around, hoping to catch sight of her. There were quite a few people out for a weeknight, he thought, checking out the sights as he walked. Then he saw it. Further up the block, a blue neon sign showed the way to Eternities. There was a crowd outside the club, small, but a crowd nonetheless. Aidan crossed the street and stood directly across from the club. He let out a low whistle. Judging from the façade and the way the clientele were dressed, it looked like a swanky place. They probably wouldn’t let him past the front door even if there hadn’t been a line and confrontation wasn’t an option. Dejected, he set off again back the way he’d just come. He reached the intersection where he’d started and headed off in the opposite direction. After three blocks, the action suddenly ended. Gone were the bars and restaurants, replaced by a few odd stores, all of which were closed for the evening. He decided to head back to the abandoned warehouse in the hopes that maybe she would come back on her own. He started walking back, and after only a block, decided that this was ridiculous. He had always been the type to go after what he wanted, and damn it, he wanted her. The street he was on now was deserted. He looked at the long row of parked cars and started walking again, checking out each one. He noticed that most of the cars had parking permit stickers on their windshields, as parking around this area was probably at a premium. Finally he found one without a sticker. The other cars had all been about the same as far as monetary value, too. There were four BMWs, a Jag, a Lexus, and a brand new Caddie intermingled with several top of the line SUVs. This car, however, was an older model Chevy sedan and obviously not from around here. Aidan scanned the block again. There was no one outside and none of the houses had lights on either upstairs or down. He crouched down low and reached into his back pocket, producing his lock picking tools and a pair of leather gloves. There was no alarm on the car that he could see, so he pulled the gloves on and a second later, carefully pulled the car door open. He was in. He pulled the wires out from behind the steering column and sparked them to life, quickly pulling out of the parking spot and driving off. Alexa hadn’t been paying attention to where she was going and before she realized it, she was only a block from the warehouse. Fate must be at work here, she thought, but fate could be wrong, too. She turned around and cut down another side street. Tears were starting to cloud her vision and she angrily wiped at them as she stormed away in another direction. It wasn’t long after that the smell of marijuana assailed her nostrils, making her look up. Several bikers were standing around outside a bar, passing around a joint. A few of them said things like, “hey baby,” or they whistled. Except for one who was standing by himself, leaning against his shiny black Harley, “You’re too pretty for tears.” She really was not in the mood for this but that one got her attention. What the hell, she thought; if I can’t drink alcohol I’ll overindulge another way. He took a few steps closer to her when she stopped and the rest of them fell silent, turning their attention back to their weed. “Yeah, well, it’s been a rough night,” she said. He pulled a bandana from a leather pouch hanging over his motorcycle and handed it to her. “It’s clean.” “Thank you,” she said, taking it. It even smelled clean. She wiped her eyes and blotted her tear-streaked face. “Keep it,” he told her. She looked around at the other bikers, then back at him. They all had the same insignia on their jackets, but that was where the similarities ended. This guy was younger than the others by about ten years or so. He had some light stubble on his face, long dirty-blond hair with a slight wave to it and pretty, dark blue eyes. “Name’s Ripper.” “Ripper, huh? I’m Alexa.” “Name as pretty as the face.” “Do you always lay it on so thick?” “No. But I am always honest.” “I don’t take compliments very well. I always think men have an ulterior motive.” “We do. Well, at least, I do. Or rather, I did. But seeing as how you’re so upset I wouldn’t feel right by adding to your troubles.” “Is that so?” “Should I offer to buy you a beer?” “You can but I don’t drink.” “Smoke?” “I don’t smoke, either.” “Then I guess I’m out of options.” “How about a place where we can be alone?” “What about that ulterior motive thing you mentioned?” “Maybe you’re just the type of distraction I need.” “My place?” he asked. She raised an eyebrow. “All right, bad idea. If you don’t mind the cold there’s the old church park.” “I don’t if you don’t,” she agreed, playing along. “Then hop on.” Alexa smiled. They were so predictable. Even the tiniest hint of sexual gratification and they were like dogs wagging their tongues. Ripper offered her a hand and she swung her leg over the backseat of his Harley. He smelled of leather and stale cigarettes but she wasn’t looking to fuck him. She could handle it long enough to take what she needed. He turned the key and revved the engine. As they sped away, Alexa wrapped her arms around him. His heart was racing almost as fast as they were. They stopped at a red light and Alexa ran her hand over his chest. He pulled over a few blocks later at a tree-lined park, known for being a make out spot. He gave Alexa a hand off the bike, but before he let go he pulled her in for a kiss. She accepted it readily, having to appear eager. He was a good kisser, if a little rough, but he was nothing like Aidan. “You like it like that?” he asked. “Sometimes.” “How about now?” She pulled him closer and grabbed his crotch. “What do you think?” “I think I might be in for it,” he said, wincing. She chuckled deep in her throat, “You could say that.” The two of them strode into the park and found a nice, dark, secluded spot and stretched out on the grass. He was all over her in a matter of seconds, kissing her. He was strong and forceful; his weight felt good on her, but that was all. There was no spark. With Aidan, she felt a spark. No, more than a spark. With Aidan, it had been pure fire. Now she knew she’d overreacted. He wasn’t afraid of her, but curious. It was only natural for him to ask questions. Ripper slid out of his leather jacket and started to paw at her. Rough she could stand, sloppy she hated; and he was getting sloppy. She was quickly getting bored with him, wishing he were someone else. She tried to push him off inconspicuously but he was too strong. Invoking her Vamp strength, she pushed him again and he rolled off and stared at her, stunned. “Hey! What’s up?” he asked, more than a little miffed. “I suddenly realized I want you to be someone else.” Before he could say another word, she caught his gaze and locked on, willing him to forget her. She pushed him onto his back. Alexa crawled over him and drank her fill, leaving him to wake up on his own. She wiped her mouth clean with the borrowed bandana and tossed it in the nearest trash bin. She exited the park and hopped up onto the low brick wall that surrounded it. She gazed up at the sky. The night was dark, black and almost starless in the city. She could hear the traffic flying by on the divided highway, faster than the speed limit. She ignored it all and tried to think of what to do. She had promised to help Aidan but how would things be between them now? Awkward wouldn’t even begin to describe it. Tense was more like it. Could they just pick up where they’d left off? Then what? It would just be harder to let him go. If she went her own way now, she wouldn’t have to go through it again. It was better this way. Right? She kept here eyes on the few stars overhead, looking for an answer that would never come. She heard brakes screeching and waited for a crash, but even that didn’t interest her enough to break her stare. A car door slammed and she heard footsteps coming toward her. Oh, go away, she thought. Can’t I just sit here in peace being miserable? “Alexa?” She lowered her gaze and saw Aidan coming toward her. -------------------- |
